Nikon guys, what's with the NEF format?

One thing that I have not seen mentioned is that RAW processing software is not editing software. For example, you cannot use the RAW software to add text, clone out objects, selective coloring, etc. So, you do not eliminate your need for an editing program by getting a good RAW program.

With Lightroom 2 and the latest ACR that's not true anymore. In addition to the spot tool, which clones and heals, you also have the adjustment brush, gradient tool, post-crop vignette, etc. In the Slideshow and Print modules you can also add text, logo, or a watermark and print to file or export the image as a jpg.

With LR you can do all the things you mentioned, but it's true that there's a lot of stuff, that you cannot do that Photoshop can do. And some of the stuff that you can do with LR is just easier to do in Photoshop.

That is my main point. It is nice to hear that some of that stuff is finally making it to RAW processing programs b/c I personally have never understood why it was not there to begin with. I suspect it is not so "full featured" in order to prevent cannibalizing PS sales. Everyone else pretty much follows Adobe's lead.
