Nikon D800 and D800E

I'd rather have better high ISO performance and a significantly lower MP count. Here's hoping people start unloading their D700s for lower prices!

It's a different camera for a specific purpose. If you want better low-light and faster drive performance, Nikon will sell you a D4.

Regardless of how Nikon wants to market it, many view a D700/D800 as an "entry-level full frame DSLR" due to its price. The D4 is cost-prohibitive to many of these same people. To treat them interchangeably as if someone can just as easily purchase one instead of the other for their specific purpose doesn't match the reality of the pricing structure.

Of course, it's Nikon's (and Sony's since they're making the sensors) prerogative to price its cameras how it sees fit with the features and functionality it deems appropriate.

Likewise, it's my prerogative to wish that the feature-set were different and "vote with my wallet."

I think that it is a very exciting camera, but that it is somewhat of a specialty camera. I wouldn't be surprised to see them either keep the D700 in the lineup or replace it with a camera more similar to the D4. The D800 looks like it will be a great portrait/landscape/wedding photographer's camera. It will be a lousy sports camera and a step backward for those needing high ISO performance (which is common for Disney photogs). I'll be curious to see how it performs. In its approach, it is like the 5D model line for Canon or like a cheap version of a medium format camera.

If it were a Canon, the only thing holding me back from pre-ordering it would be the decision between the normal or E version. I'd be very tempted to get the E version and just fall back on my older cameras for those occasional situations where moire becomes a problem. With the exception of Disney trips, the overwhelming majority of my shooting happens are relatively low ISO. I more often find myself wanting more resolution than high ISO or high fps.

Hmmmm. So I just scanned this, and it looks like it has the same ISO range as the D700, correct?

Is it performing worse than the D700 at high ISOs, or the same?

If the ISO performance is the same as a D700, then, if I were in the market for an entry level full-frame NOW... I'd get the newer camera (D800). More resolution would be nice.

But seeing as how I'm not in the market, and the D800 apparently doesn't offer any advantage on ISO range, I can happily stick with my D700 and not feel jealous. :)

With 36 mega pixels it will be worse unless you downsize to 12 mega pixels then it would be supposedly be one stop better. It's clearly geared towards studio/landscape shooters who want to dabble in video. It's called a D800 but it's not a D700 replacement at all IMHO. From the sounds of it that's just not going to happen. I'm couldn't be happier with my D700 and wasn't looking to upgrade but if it happens to suddenly crap out on me I don't feel the D800 would be what I'd replace it with.

I am so frustrated right now. I have been waiting for over a year now for the D800 to be announced. I think the camera announced is an amazing camera. I have called it more of a boutique camera. When the D700 came out many considered it the little brother of the D3. The D800 is more like the D4's first cousin. You see the similarities but you can tell it came from a different place. I actually think it more like the little brother of the D3X with the higher MP rating and the lower ISO.

I do believe that even though the ISO ratings are the same on the 700 as the 800 that the image on the 800 will be cleaner than the 700 at a higher ISO because of the newer sensor.

I am also interested in playing with the video.......

Right now I am thinking of a used D700 and save my pennies for the D4. Lets see what the D400 looks like!

It never ends!

Curious about the D400 too since the D300s has been discontinued.

I think I'm just going to start buying lottery tickets or rob a bank so I can go straight to the D4.

I'm also wondering when these latest releases from Nikon will be in people's hands since Nikon has been dealing with the impact from the natural disaster in Japan and everywhere you look it's Pre-order only in stores.
