Anyone else have one yet? What do you think of it?

I'm absolutely blown away by this camera. So glad I purchased it. I put some sample pics (and comparisons to the D7000 and D700) on my blog.

I can't wait to shoot with this at WDW!

Awesome Tom! I look forward to seeing your shots. I check out your blog very often. Instead of moving up, I moved to mirrorless. I'm waiting on a Nex FF kind of like the RX1. I just love the portability of the small cameras. I am keeping my eye on the Pentax K5IIs without the AA filter. FF is just out of reach for me financially. Maybe in a couple of years

Enjoy. I am in a suite at the AoA right now. I left the D800 at home and brought Micro 4/3 instead. This resort is cool. I hear music and voices underwater in the pool.

The Nikon D600 allows you to add yet another wrinkle into the Auto ISO calculation, and that’s focal length! We’re all (hopefully) familiar with the 1/focal length rule for shutter speed, and now Nikon allows you to apply this rule (or your a “slower” or “faster” variant thereof) when setting the shutter speed floor.

This. is. awesome.

Haven't even read the whole review yet, just got to that statement and had to come say this!

Totally wish the D700 did this.

Okay, off to read the rest of the review...

Hey Tom, are the eyecups interchangeable between the D600 and the D7000? They appear to be the same DK-21.

I just did the DK-17M mod for my D7000 and with a split prism focusing screen it just does wonders for checking focus before you snap the photo or for more accurate manual focus (like dark rides where it would hunt for focus).

I did have back focusing issues with my D7000 and tried dialing in +/-12 (I can't remember which way it goes) to compensate. I sent it back to Nikon and they had to do a focus re-calibration on it. Much better now, only need minor compensation on a couple lenses. The Tokina 11-16mm I bought from you was back focusing, but only needed to micro adjust -5, so no biggie. (btw, awesome lens!)

I have the D7000 also and am thinking of picking up the D600. The link to your blog was removed. Can you post your sample and comparison pics here? I would love to see them.

TIA,
Kevin

I've (sort of) done the same by adding the Sony RX100 to my lineup. Now I have both portability and "big" guns.

For me, portability is an all or nothing proposition. Either it can fit in my pocket, or it can't. If it can't fit in my pocket, it doesn't matter if it's "somewhat large" or "large." It's all the same at that point.

This. is. awesome.

I haven't heard anyone else talk about this, and I didn't quite understand what the heck the "Auto" shutter speed meant at first, but once it dawned on me (I didn't bother reading the manual...so it took a few minutes), I realized just how huge this is, especially for Disney shooters!

I'm dubbing this the "sleeper" feature of the camera! ;) I already have auto ISO (top "my menu" item) set to one of the customizable buttons. So great for my shooting.

I think so, but I'll have to check when I get home.

There never was a link to my blog in this post. A while ago, some administrator decided that my blog was "commercial" and removed every reference to it in my signature and blocked it via a word filter. The admin was right, it absolutely is commercial...in the sense that I have ads to pay for ever-growing operating costs (if anyone is getting rich off the site, it certainly isn't me!).

I've asked for explanation from this admin on multiple occasions, but have received none.

This has been a sore subject for me, and I have not posted here much less as of late because of it. I really like the community (on this sub forum at least), but I have "other" feelings about some aspects of this site...

I will not repost the content of my blog post here (it took me hours to post it in the first place). You can easily find the post via Google if you know my name is Tom Bricker.

I have read more than one post from individuals who have had links to their blogs removed...and when these folks asked for clarification from the moderators they were also ignored.

Obviously the moderators have plenty of time to remove links, but surprisingly cannot make the time to answer questions regarding removal of the links. :rolleyes2

Over the last day or so I'm really really really considering getting the D600. My D300 needs to be sent in for repair for a number of issues, most of which have been around for a while but weren't a big deal (mostly felt with the battery pack), but last week I started having issues with the shutter speed. I shoot in manual and each time I would release the shutter, the shutter speed would jump a full stop in either direction depending on my last shutter speed was. For example, if I switched to 1/250 from 1/500, then took a picture at 1/250 the shutter speed would then change itself to 1/125. VERY VERY ANNOYING! I can't take 3 or 4 shots in a row because the shutter would change for each image.

I have 3 events coming up in the next 3-4 weeks (plus a few other events in November) that I need my camera for. I do still have my D50, but I'm way past that and it only takes up to 2GB SD cards which even though that camera is only 6MP, doesn't give me a lot of shots per card.

After the D700 was announced a few years back I was really interested in FF. Now that the D600 is available at a lower price I'm VERY tempted and torn on what to do. I think I get get some extra money, but if I come out an tell the family CEO (aka my wife) that I'm buying a $2100 camera body I may be shot on the spot.

I was thinking of renting one while my D300 is being fixed, but for the 3 different events next month that will be over $400. Why not just put that towards a new one.

OHHHHH!!! Decisions. Decisions. Decisions. Why must you torment me like this Nikon! WHY!!!????

It sounds like your "issue" is that you're bracketing your shots. I don't know the exact method of turning off bracketing on the D300, but you should be able to find it in the manual.

I could be totally off on that, that's what it sounds like to me.

Now that I think about it, you may be right. It's possible that it could have been activated by accident. I have never used the bracketing. I did however notice the icon on the display, but I thought it was for the flash. I always lower the popup flash power and I did use the popup a few weeks ago for some fill.

When I get home ill check the settings. If that fixes it I still have the issues with the battery pack which will have to be fixed eventually. This may give me more time to get a better way to get the D600.

Thanks for the suggestion Tom. I'll let you know what I find.

It was the bracketing. Somehow after almost 4 years of using the D300 I accidentally turned it on for the first time. There are two buttons on the front right side of the camera body (looking at the camera from the top), one button is from depth of field preview and below that is the bracketing button. I somehow pushed the button while trying to adjust shutter speed and instead turned on the bracketing.

Thanks for pointing that out Tom. :worship:

No problem, but are you sure you don't mean "Thanks :furious:" rather than "Thanks :worship:" I mean, I did take away a good "reason" for upgrading to an awesome camera! I pride myself on encouraging NAS rather than discouraging it! ;)

LOL... I would have also had to have paid to send it out (which I still do eventually, but not as much).

I think that I'm now moving my NAS over to the 70-200mm VRII f/2.8. Sure its more money than the D600, but I can probably make a better case in my head for the great glass rather than an upgraded body. Of the various events I have coming up I can definitely get a lot of use at 2 for sure. In fact for one of the events next month I've rented this lens in each of the last 3 years.

Being in the NAS mood isn't a good thing sometimes.

The explanation I received is that I could have a blog URL if I also placed a banner to DIS in a prominent position on my site. It's apparently in the FAQ or rules posted here someplace. I was unwilling to do so, which is also one of the reasons I've been away for a while. After all, how valuable is this forum without our participation to provide content? That's not worth a link?

To get back on topic, I like the D600 for a lot of reasons, but I'm leaning toward the D800. There are some crippled aspects of the D600 for the kind of photography I like to do (no PC Sync port, reduced auto-exposure bracketing), but I'd rather have the smaller file size in the D600 than the D800.

I have no doubt that both create awesome photos. It's just a matter of features for what you want to do.
