Opinions please on Nikon D40X. I see the D40 has been addressed, just wondering if anyone has any thoughts on the D40. I'm a long time SLR user but never really learned as much as I should. So let's say I'm a beginner.

Thanks for any input.

I think you are going to find the same criticism of the D40x as the D40. The lack of a focusing motor in the body makes it incompatible with some lenses (especially older lenses and some primes). This issue may go away over time as Nikon releases more AF-S lenses. You need to look at what lenses you think you would like to have in your kit in the short term and make sure they will autofocus on your camera. For example, The 50mm primes are popular and you'd be able to use them but you would have to focus them manually.

It would be a good beginner camera and the Nikon line is a great system to buy into. :thumbsup2

Besides the motor issue which has been well documented at this point.

what I would look at is reviews of the ISO performance. Did the noise get worse with the more megapixals? I honest don't know the answer and have not researched either camera, but it is something you should look into before you buy.

They are basically both the same camera with the exception of 6.1MP vs 10MP and 1 or 2 other small things. Other biggest difference is about $300. The D40x is certainly (IMO) not worth the extra cost. 6.1MP is more than enough. 10MP is overkill, especially on a small dSLR like the D40x.

Both do have very good high ISO performance. If your thinking about the D40x, then your better off getting the D80 which isn't to much more and its a much better camera overall and doesn't have the lens issue that the D40/x have.

I agree with Kyle on this; online price difference between the D40X and the D80, equipped with the 18-135mm kit lens, is only $220.
