Ok I just go the Nikon D40 and it is different than the cameras I am use to this is my first SLR camera and I was taking a few pics and I was wondering what lens do I need to get close up pics?

Close up photos from how far away? If you would like to take close ups from further away from your subject, you will need a telephoto lens like the Nikon 50-200 VR (just one example). For a close up of an object from up close (like the hair on a bee's butt or pollen on a flower), you will need a dedicated macro lens like the Nikon 105mm Micro.

I know the kit lens with most cameras is a little limiting, but don't forget---you can always get closer up by zooming on your feet. It's a little more of a hassle, but it's cheap!! :thumbsup2

My D40 came with the 18-55 and the 55-200 lenses. I like the 55-200 VR the best but am pleased with both. If you are trying to take close ups with either and they are blurry just remember you have to be around a foot from what you are shooting or it won't be in focus. If you want to go closer you will need a macro lens like annewjerz mentioned.

well I am going to DL in Oct so like pics from a long distance as well as like the distance when taking character pics as well. I guess I am trying to get my camera ready for the Oct trip, Thanks for the info love the example for really close up like the bee but would never do it I hate bees I freak out lol :)

If you take a look at the bottom of your lens by the serial number it will tell you the minimum distance.
  • 18-55 min is .92ft/0.28m
  • 55-200 VR min is 3.61ft/1.1m

If you are serious about Macro photography I would suggest purchasing a Macro Lens $$$. Or, get an old lens that is 100% manual for much much less. With macro you will really want to manual focus anyway instead of fighting with auto focus.

TIP: Use a tripod and a remote shutter release for sharp shots. Close up shots will easily blur with the slightest movement.
