o.k. I might finally bump up to the DSLR. I have a Lumix FZ8 that I really like, but I find myself missing the shot too often or its too dark

I'm looking at the d40 with 2 lens bundle (18-55 and 55-200)

I want to be able to take basketball, football and soccer photos plus your typical family life and vacation photos. What type of lens do I need for sports photos?

And is the flash on this camera adequate for most situations? I don't use a flash during basketball games - I think it is distracting, so will the above lens sizes cover me?

Yes, I am new to DSLR, so these questions might sound stupid but oh well!!

I have exactly what your describe but hated having to change lenses. I bought the 18-200 VR and use it 90% of the time. The sports shooting mode is pretty good. I do more landscape and flower photography. I am anxious to hear others' suggesstions - I am very disappointed in the pictures of my puppy romping around so far.

I am not a pro but a serious picture taker - do everything for my family. I love the D40 and have found little to compain about.

I think they would be fine for the outdoor sports as long as it is daytime. It probably would not be the best for night or the indoor shots. You really need a faster lens for that. The best option is a fast long zoom like a Sigma or Tamron 70-200mm f/2.8, but that starts at around $800 so I do not know if that is in your budget. The actual Nikon brand one is above $1K I believe. Another option is a prime lens, but then you are stuck at one focal length. I am not all that familiar with the Nikon primes, so I do not know if the no focus motor issue would be a problem when you get above the 50mm one that does not AF with the D40.

I shoot Nikon but do not use the D40. I think it is a great kit. Particularly if the 50-200 is the vr version.

As previous stated you will be able to take great shots with good light. I also agree that the kit lens you describe are not fast enough to take stop action basketball shots indoors. You will not want to use a flash. Also the flash on the camera is ok for the occasional snapshot but not strong enough for serious flash work.

The 70-200 2.8 mentioned made by Nikon is $1600 and well worth the money if you want to take the basketball and night football pictures.

The D40 is a great start, but for the shots you are mentioning, you will need faster lenses.
