I just saw that The Nightmare before Christmas is out on DVD today. Unfotuantely, I don't know much about it. Is it scary? Would it be ok for my 7 and 5 year olds? I'm not sure if I should buy it or not. I appreciate your comments!

My DGS (3years) loves this movie, but it is a little "creepy", skeletons/witches - I would say if your kids like halloween characters and aren't scared of them they should be ok.

I think its one of those "depends on how your kids handle stuff" movies. Are they scared by the villans in the movies? It is dark in color in Halloween land and is full of skeletons, boogy man, they kid nap Santa and try to take over Christmas land (they don't think they are being bad about it, them mean good but only understand their world of Halloween)then give the kids scary stuff like snakes and heads in a box.

Wow when you write it out it sounds really bad. LOL Of course every thing works out in the end.

It has some really neat stuff but you need to take your kids ques on this one.

This is mine and my 4 yr olds favorite movie, but it did first creep her out a little.

I have only seen bits and pieces of this show.I personally don't like what I've seen. I might be a bit unfair, since I haven't seen the whole thing. I really need to watch it, but at this point I have other Disney movies I would rather buy than that one.

My 4 year old loves it. It is a bit creepy in places, but i think it sends a good message about understanding other's customs ect, and getting along.

For the tone of the movie, I think a fairly reasonable comparison could be made between it and The Haunted Mansion (the ride). For the most part, I'd hazard a guess that if your kids can handle the ride well, there's a good chance they should be able to handle this movie. Both are a little scary in a fun way, if that makes sense. There are some cartoonish gruesome elements in the movie, as already mentioned by pervious posters, but the movie isn't gory, and there aren't really any "jump out and scare you" elements either.

In some ways, it reminds me of Monsters Inc. Both Monstropolis and Halloween Town are populated by those who make scaring their business, but they aren't evil -- it's just their job, more or less. And each has an exception or two to that, who serve as the villain(s) for each film.

I'd say it depends on the kid. Did your child absolutely LOVE Haunted Mansion? If so, it's sure to be a hit. My boys are ADDICTED to the Haunted Mansion and Nightmare Before Christmas is their favorite movie... hands down.

My DD saw it when she was six and DS was four. They both say it was their favorite movie. DD says it wasn't scary at all. ;) Another Favorite of theirs was James and the Giant Peach.

this is my dd(11) favorite movie when she was 2 and still she loves it and owns a lot of Jack stuff. she went out and bought it today w/ her b-day money, so we now have an updated version and the original vhs.
you could go to blockbuster or a movie store and rent it first. i think you would enjoy it. it's more like Tim Burton movies like the Corpse Bride in a way.
love the soundtrack also. dd has that too.

My dd is 3 and she loves this movie, but she is sometimes into villains/scarier stuff. I would say it just depends on your kid. But I would say get it if you are thinking about it, because it may go back in the Disney vault. There have been a few movies that I regretted not buying because I thought at the time that dd wouldn't like it and now they aren't available anymore.

I am thinking about getting the new version just because it was updated and this is one of our faves. From what I have seen in the trailers online it looks more like it did in 3D in the theater.:3dglasses

My kids like the movie and loved it even more when we got to do the ride during the holiday overlay at the Haunted Mansion at Disneyland.
I think it is a movie that kids like for the entertainment value, but the older they get the more they "appreciate" it as they get it more...as with many Disney movies, it is mulitlayered...

At age 5, DD freaked out within first 2 minutes and we stopped there. But DS at 6 LOVED it. Depends on the kid. It is darker than most kids shows but very cool animation.

this movie has been a staple in our household since the day it was released on VHS way back when. DS1 was 3 years old and he knew all the songs by heart. We now have 3 kids and we all love it!

My son watched it early on and loved it. He's 7 now, and I can't wait to buy him this new release of it. (I love it more than he does!!!!) I agree with the PP's that say just to think about what kind of child will be watching it. Mine has watched Scooby Doo since birth, so this was nothing out of the ordinary for him!

My son's 6, and we tried it earlier this year. He loved Haunted Mansion and bought himself a Jack Skellington doll with his allowance as a Disney souvenir. So we thought, what the heck? Less than 10 minutes into the movie, we had to turn it off and he had nightmares that night. If your kids are susceptible to atmosphere, might want to wait till they're a little bigger -- the look is very dark and Gothic. (Very cool, though -- I'm definitely not knocking the movie.)

Imagine Halloween meets Christmas  .....my dd loved it at age four. It has always had a soft spot in my heart. :goodvibes I just love Jack Skelington.

You have to really watch the whole movie to appreciate it. It is one of those movies that if you see bits and pieces out of context it would probably seem much creepier than it really is! I agree with other posts, it depends on your child. My DD8 is fearless, so she saw the movie for the first time when she was probably around 2 and loves it! And it is one of my all time favorites!!!

I saw this movie when I was little and I was terrified. Still am :scared: ! I think it depends on your kids. I think your 7yo would be okay but your 5yo might be a little afraid.
