Night Portrait Mode

I really like this mode on my Canon Rebel. This is the first camera I've owned with this particular feature.

Now if they'd just come up with a mode to do something about goofy expressions on DS's face.

Anyone know how Night Portrait Mode works? I'm guessing that it is the same as setting the camera in aperture priority mode and using the flash. When you do that, it exposes the forground with the flash but keeps the shutter open long enought to expose the background as well.

I believe that the S2 has this mode. If it does not, any camera with manual controls can do it. From what I understand, it sets the aperture to the most open setting, turns on the flash, and sets the shutter for about 1/4 - 1/2 second. Because of this, it is best to use a tripod or at least brace the camera.

you probably can.. the icon would be in the auto mode and look like a person with a dark sky and a star behind him( it's on my daughter's a 600 and my rebel xt). on mine it's the last icon before the no flash but that might be different on yours.

I love it too. I took some great shots of my DH out by the pool using the night portrait mode a few weeks ago.

Of course I accidently reformated the memory card and lost them. Couldn't even get them back when I used my card reader and image rescue.

LOL Oh well - at least they weren't of something that I can't easily take pics of again.

Now if only they would come up with a fireworks setting that worked that great. So we could use a simple auto mode and have fantastic disney fireworks shots.
