night before departure question

do you recommend using priceline, hotwire or something like that to get a room for the night before departure? Or booking through a hotel's web site, or just going down there and finding a room? I want (of course) a good deal and would love even better to find a good deal on a hotel that includeds shuttle....any amount of help would be greatly appreciated

I've done both. Our first cruise, I was a bit afraid to try priceline, so I checked around on sites like hotels.com to find the going discount rate, then ended up booking directly with the hotel. We stayed at one of the Orlando airport Amerisuites for something like $59 or $69. It had breakfast, a pool, and was close to the airport. Clean, but nothing special. Our 2nd cruise, I decided to try priceline. I think I bid 3 star minimum, and we ended up with the Renaissance at the airport for $33 + fees (less than $40 total). Even with having to buy breakfast the next morning, we saved money over our last decision. I've also used Hotwire to get rooms other places and saved a lot too.

Pros/Cons that I've seen:

Booking directly with the hotel: You know where you're staying, what they offer, and how much you'll pay. Downside is it's more expensive (but sometimes AAA discounts, mousesavers codes or other special offers can make it comparable, so don't rule it out)

Hotwire: you don't know the hotel before you lock, but you do know the price, and the amenities. Usually cheaper than direct, but more than priceline. They offer a sister service where you know the name of the hotel, but it's a slightly higher price. I've forgotten the name, but they usually offer you a direct link from hotwire.

Priceline: You don't know if they'll take your bid. If they don't, you can't re-bid within a set amount of time (problem if your trip is coming soon!). They describe "typical" amenities at that level of hotel, but don't guarantee that your hotel will have them (can be an issue if you need a shuttle or a free breakfast). Pros, usually the cheapest price around.

It really depends on your personal preference. Hope this helps! Lisa

I reccommend you go to betterbidding.com and biddingfortravel.com. They will give you the names of hotels being won in the area you are looking for along with recent prices. There is great information there that teaches you how to use Priceline and Hotwire. They are the best bets for deals. You can get really low prices for very nice properties. So I suggest checking it out. Get an idea from the hotel websites what rooms are going for and you can decide. Especially if it doesn't matter to you where you stay and its only for one night this may be your best bet.

Ditto what TheWog sez.

Those 2 sites have loads of info on how to get the best room for your money while getting the amenities you want, within reason. (Shuttle, type of hotel, etc.)

Good luck!

i just booked via priceline this evening. i bid on a 3 star. rejected at $38 and $42. was accepted at $50. orlando airport area. ended up with Crowne Royal Plaza 1 1/2 miles away from the airport - they have a free shuttle. i've never used priceline before, it was kinda fun! good luck.

I usually do Priceline for the night before the cruise because I really don't care what the "brand" of the hotel is--I want clean and safe. I can pick the area--do I want to stay near the airport or near Port Canaveral?

I can generally get a room for about $31-35. With the priceline fee, that means about $40 for the night. We've gotten some very nice 3* hotels in that range.

One time we dropped to a 2* in the FL Mall area (not far from airport, but you'll need a car) and got it for $23 per night which included breakfast!
