Question? My nephew just turned 19. Do you still think we should be buying him birthday gifts? What age do you cut that kind of stuff off? or never? On my side of the family its 18, but hubby doesn't have a clue on what to do...its his brothers son. They also have a daughter, and we have been giving to both since they were born. We will continue with the daughter, but unsure about the son.

How does you family handle this?

We cut ours off earlier than that, just because all we got were complaints from the parents about each gift and not one thank you note in 14-ish years. If circumstances had been different, we still would have stopped at 18. As it was, we carried on longer than anyone else in their family.
You have to consider that there are the upcoming college graduations, weddings and baby showers that you will be expected to gift for, so it is not as if you are out of their lives completely. We went to NC for my nephew's graduation and NJ for my niece's wedding, so you can see we are still on speaking terms.

You do what your heart directs you to do. Gifts should not be given out of a sense of obligation. If you do not feel like giving the kid a gift then dont. On a personal note, I have several nieces and nephews over the age of eighteen. We buy gifts for all of them. But its b/c we love these kids and want to celebrate their special days. Not b/c of some family dictate.

I just received a nice thank you from my newly married 26 year old nephew....thanking me for the birthday check I sent. I have 2 nieces and 2 nephews. Several years ago one of my brothers decided he didn't want to exchange gifts with the "kids" any more. I still exchange with the others. My kids actually look forward to the check from their uncle!
