Ds12 likes the song If Everyone Cared and I was wondering if Nickelback is an appropriate band for kids his age? How are their lyrics - anything I need to know about? Thanks for any help you can give! :)

There are F-Bombs here and there, and one of their songs ("Figured You Out") was banned from the airwaves in the UK due to sexual content. More than a few drug references, particularly in the older material.

Appropriate is subjective, but my guess is that many parents would think it's not appropriate for a 12 year old.

mm. Some songs are okay, others are questionable. The song "animals" on the cd All The Right Reasons, for example, is about having sex in a car. While "far away" on the same CD, is a love song.

BTW, if 'everyone cared' is on this CD.

Basically this CD has
Follow You Home-this one should be okay.
Fight For All The Wrong Reasons-this is a tad questionable.
Photograph-this one is okay.
Animals-This one isn't really okay
Savin Me-this is okay
Next Contestant-tad questionable
Side Of A Bullet-This one is okay
If Everyone cared-she likes this one?
Someone That Youre With-I think this one would be okay
Rockstar-This one is questionable.

I'm not sure if Photograph is OK. Chad sings about breaking into his school and being arrested for it. There is also a vague drug reference that would probably go over most 12 year olds heads.

All the Right Reasons is probably the most PC CD the band has put out though--except for "Animals" most of it is a lot of innuendo.

Rock Star verse about having drug dealer on speed dial. Love the song but it is pretty iffy

No worse and probably a lot better than many other bands out there. I know I never pay attention to the meanings of the lyrics anyways.

Nickelback songs are just inane drivel for the most part. Probably OK for kids, but they might lose a few brain cells in the process. Definitely NOT the thinking person's band.

I was going to say Nickelback isn't appropriate for anyone. I really don't care for them. Every song sounds the same.

I know I am in the minority, though since they are very popular.

I think Side of a Bullet maybe iffy. It's about how Chad felt after hearing about Pantera's gutarist Dimebag Darrell's murder.
Here are the lyrics:
Side Of A Bullet
Lyrics - All The Right Reasons :.

Uncle Sam taught him to shoot
Maybe a little too well
Finger on the trigger, loaded bullet
He hit the stage so full of rage
And let the whole world know it
Six feet away, they heard him say
Oh God, dont let him pull it

Please God, dont let him pull it
How could you put us through it?
His brother watched you do it

How could you take his life away?
How could you be so full of hate?
And when I heard you let him die
And made the world all wonder why
I sat at home and on my own,
I cried alone

And scratched your name
On the side of a bullet

And in the wake of his mistake
So many lives are broken
Gone forever from a loaded bullet
And no excuse that you could use
Could pull somebody through it
And to this day so many say
God why'd you let him do it?

How could you let him do it?
How could you put us through it?
His brother watched him do it

How could you take his life away?
How could you be so full of hate?
And when I heard you let him die
And made the world
all wonder why
I sat at home and cried alone
and on my own
I scratched your name
On the side of a bullet
On the side of a bullet
On the side of a bullet

I don't see "Side of a Bullet" as objectionable, but that's just me.

I'm just saying it might not be a song for a 12 yr old. I personally love the song.

wow - isn't 12 like 7th grade? I can think of more objectionable artists than Nickelback.

I think Girls Girls Girls came out when I was that age and I owned that album. I know I had early Metallica too.

I also think I had a 2 Live Crew album sometime in Jr High.

Basically Nickelback is prob better than most out there.

Animals is a very naughty song. I would say no for a 12 yr old. I happen to love the song!

We must be about the same age.

Personally, I let my son listen to a lot worse when he was that age (Eminem comes to mind). Depends on what your child is used to hearing. I've always been a Top40 or rock station, non-censored type of person.

If your child is used to hearing nothing but Radio Disney, you might be a little shocked.

I think appropriateness is all in the eyes of the beholder.

DS is 10. He's never really listened to 'kiddie' music, and mostly has listened to the stuff DH and I listen to: Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Queen, (DH) and lots and lots of college and alternative stuff on my side. Throw in some Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, and Jimmy Buffett.

We screen most of what he listens to, and if the language is really bad we'll pull it off his iPod. We also talk about even though some words are in the songs he listens to, does not make it OK for him to use them. So far, so good.

Of course he LOVES Green Day (old and new), and those boys have MAJOR potty mouths. :lmao:

I think quite a lot of Nickelback is OK for kids (would not be my first choice for me)

Everyone I know listens to Nickelback, even 9yo's. Most kids that age don't even listen to the words really, just the chorus. I personally love Nickelback, especially Figured You Out which is kind of inappropriate so why do I like it? I have no clue. :confused3 Far Away, Savin' Me, and If Everyone Cared are all great, clean songs though, with maybe one mild word in there. But yeah, not that many worries, not with this new album anyway. Just drug references and mild sex references that I've heard.

My advice don't totally ban it. go online look up the lyrics to the songs she likes see if you approve, if you don't give her a reason i.e. they use language i don't like or sing about things i don't think you should hear or we don't agree with etc (shes 12 and almost a 7th grader she wants a good reason) then go to either walmart or itunes and download the songs you feel are appropriate and burn them onto a CD, you know what shes hearing and she at least gets a few of the songs she wants. and trust me i have heard many of their songs on the radio and from what ive heard they aren't that bad. a bit inappropriate but they play this stuff and worse at dances.

also if it makes you feel any better she will probably hear worse day to day in the halls of middle school. popcorn::
