We are going to the Fort in August, and we would like to camp for about a week before heading there. We are looking for a nice place in Florida that is on the ocean. Has anyone here stayed somewhere that you would recommend? There are so many options on line! :confused3

The best campground in Florida besides FW is Topsail Hill State park in Destin FL. It is an old Rv resort that the state bought and turned in to a state park. All sites are full hookup with concrete pad and grass area. It has a pool, tennis courts and is on the ocean although there are no sites on the beach. The closest are about 150 yrds but there is a tram that runs from the campground to the beach. Topsail hill is located in northeast Fl near where the panhandle turns. Great place.......... :cool1:

YES! :thumbsup2

We are trying to book a trip there as we speak! I find it so visually appealing, yet we've never gotten to go! THIS YEAR I say!

:sunny: Thanks that place looks nice, we also found a place in St. Augustine called North Beach Camp Resort. It looks good too? Have you heard of it?

Never heard of it. BUT, we don't do the beaches on the Atlantic Coast. I like the Gulf better as the tides seem to be not as rough. I guess if you are coming down I-95, the Atlantic Beaches are better so you don't have to drive a few more hours.

Actually we come down I 75. We have never been on the gulf side, and I have only heard nice things about it. We are really having a tough time choosing. But I think we are going with the St Augustine campground.

We haven't actually stayed there yet, but we drove through Fort De Soto campground a couple weeks ago. It is at the southern end of St. Pete beach. It seemed very nice, right along the water on the bayside, short drive to the very nice gulf side beach, bike trails, nicely landscaped (and private) camp sites, and the fort ruins are just down the road. This is run by Pinellas county, and the rates seemed very reasonable (under $30 for electric and water).
We're planning to spend a few nights here next year before heading to FTW.

Fort De Soto is the place for me. It has been talked about in our house for a while now. I will be trying it this fall. They had it on RV Today last year and wow.

We loved Anastasia State Park in St. Augustine. It may not have full hookups, but it was awesome, really private with foliage inbetween sites. and just a short walk (or you can drive) to the beach.

Even if you don't camp here, you need to visit while in St. Augustine. SA is one of my favorite towns.

Rhonda the moderator on this board goes to Fort desoto and has posted good things about it! We visited the park and enjoyed it, but have not camped there. It's on the list!

Topsail looks nice. We will check it out the next time we have a chance. Usually if we go to Florida it's for Disney and/or Sarasota where family lives.

St Joe State Park on Cape San Blas is also very nice. It is sometimes difficult to get reservations. Very secluded, boardwalks close by to the beaches. It is on a peninsula, so the bay is the other side. Lots of sealife. The dunes and beach area are still very natural. One of the most beautiful beaches we have been to. We have only camped there once, but really enjoyed it. My Mom has been since then and said it was one of her favorite places to just relax. If you are looking for an area with lots to do though, this is not it. (Unless you are looking to snorkel) It is very secluded.

In Fernandina Beach... Fort Clinch is a great camping area, one side is the beach with a pier that is one mile long over the ocean the other side is on the river side... (we like the river side best) but they have a bike trail and fisihing, playground if you have kids just a nice place for relaxing...

also, oleno state park near lake city of 441, Deer come up to your campsite for breakfast and dinner which is nice, lots of walking trails, beautiful...

These are our two favorite places other that Disney of course...

Wow! Thanks for all of the great suggestions! I am so excited to go already! Thinking about camping in warm weather near the ocean sounds so GOOD right now (it's 29 degrees here!)

If you're going to Topsail, reserve in the 100 loop area. The sites are a bit larger in that section. :thumbsup2

Well I was not lucky enough to get into loop 100. In June we'll be in site 90 which seems good enough and in July we'll be in #70. When I was looking for my ressies, and trying to find out when DH would be going for work and my sister would be able to join us for a few days, there were sites open all over the place. Then a few days later when I went back to book, alot were gone so this was the best I could get for the dates I needed. We'll be far enough away from the main gate traffic that the kids can ride bikes, close enough to the pool and walk area to the beach. I guess we can ride our bikes and park then walk down the board walk to the beach. I've never been but DH was there right after Katrina and he liked the campground. We were suppose to join him for a week but with the fuel shortages, we decided not to have a second truck down there and he came home 4 days early.

Yes! We love Fort Desoto! The campsites are on the water - very private and beautiful! :teeth:

I love the FORTS!!! Next to Ft. Wilderness, Ft. Clinch is the park for me (Fernandina Beach). pirate:

If you are goint to St.Augustine try Bryn Mawr campground. We go every year. It is just south of St.Augustine on A1A. Close enough to do all the tourist stuff and the beaches are great. :thumbsup2
