The nhs have changed my father in laws bypass date again! This time to 2 weeks before we are due to fly out!!!

We were expecing a date in may so booked our holiday for sept, they have now changed his date again to August 21st, we are supposed to fly out 6th sept. To change this holiday will cost us over £2000, and we will lose our DVC DCL cruise due to point situation. Really dont know what to do as we cant afford the £2000 so will have to cancel the holiday :guilty: :guilty:
What if we cancel holiday then nhs cancel again, travel insurance people dont want to know.

I feel so torn, the kids are excited and so are we. We dont want to leave fil so ill or mil.

We do need a sign:guilty:

So sorry your all going through this...:grouphug:
I think you should still go....You'll be amazed how much he will recover in those two weeks before you go..Plus they could cancel again anyway...good luck deciding.:)

Oh bless you I feel for you. I work in the NHS. I do see your point. It is frustrating when this happens. This happens alot. My collegues brain tumor surgery was cancelled the night before. It took 3 weeks of phone calls and stress before they gave her another date. It was her who was chasing.

There are times operations are cancelled for other reasons i.e emergency from admittance into A&E to a general appt with thier consultant. Unfortunately the consultants have to cancel a few operations for this.

It is totally unfair and worrying. I feel for you. I dont understand why the insurance company will not help out? It is prob because it isnt covered. Have you spoken to the company you booked through just in case they may help you out. More than likely not, but worth a go.

From a professional point of view I would still go on your holiday. Surgery will take its toll for your fil. To be honest I think he would rather you go away. You to be contacted for immediate return if you need to. Your fil will be so tired and exhausted from his surgery. I would of either thought he may still be in hospital for physio or at home. If your mil is struggling they can offer a 6 week free service carers who can come in help with washing or shopping etc. There are many services that OT can offer you and it would be worth looking into these. I would imagine it would be beneficial for your fil to not have too many visitors when he is recovering. It can really take it out of our patients when they have visitors. Even just 2 1/2 hour visiting times 3-4 and 6:30-8pm really does cause some problems. I would definately go away. Also it might be a good idea for your children. It will help them through this stressful time. Children pick up on these things. It also is not unheard of patients relatives go away when patients have had surgery or admitted into hospital.

Good luck its a tough decision. Dont feel guiilty if you do decide to go.

sorry to hear about your problem & unable to offer any words of wisdom right now but send you hugs and what ever you decide i'm sure it wil be the right one:thumbsup2

I agree with Angel659 that you should still go away on holiday.

You should speak to your FIL and ask him what he thinks. I suspect he will say "don't cancel, go and enjoy yourself, I will be out of hospital before you go anyway so there's no need to stay around" and he would be right.

If something dire happens (which I doubt) you will have to deal with it anyway wherever you are and if it doesn't you will always ask yourself "what if".

I suspect you're just feeling guilty about going off to enjoy yourself when your FIL is ill but he could be ill anytime so why put it off.

As Michelle said, children notice things and it is probably best if you let your FIL find himself again after the op and deal with things in his own way in his own time without the pressure of the family being around.

There will be other help available and i'm sure his GP will be in contact alot more.

Good luck and

 I totally agree, sorry I can't be much help :wizard: Good luck with your decision and I hope your FIL's op goes well

My FIL had his second by-pass last year at age 84 and he was home after 5 days, so plan to continue with your holiday and only cancel if you need to following surgery.

Thank you for all your kind words, we have discussed this with mil &fil and have decided to go ahead with the trip as it will be our last holiday for 2 years (dh & I just set up own business). We cant afford the £2000 at the moment, and trying to explain the reasons for the cancelation to our autistic son would be too traumatic. We have just fully prepared him for it!!(well as best we can)

Glad to hear you're still planning on going and that you had a chat with your in laws, good luck and try to enjoy the build up :thumbsup2

glad that your going ahead with your trip and hope that all works out for the best for your father in law sending hugs to your in laws & hope they are not too disappointed
