Nexus

This is what I want to know too. We drive to Seattle to fly. So for US flights I would be domestic.

When we were at our interview we were told we could use it for US domestic flights but I think it was Global Entry at that point.

We were told it was due to US customs agents shortages-we were there at 7am

This is interesting. Must be quite the challenge for the airlines and the airport authority to juggle the schedule and gates when flights that might previously been pre-cleared are suddenly not able to.

We were also able to use Global Entry immediately following our interview.

If crossing the border by car, everyone in the vehicle must have Nexus in order to use the designated Nexus lanes.

Nexus/Global Entry is for expedited customs clearance although most Canadian airports have a special lane at security for Nexus card holders. It's much the same as having a first class ticket. You still have to go through the regular security checks but they move you to the front of the line.

If someone is driving across to Buffalo, with Nexus, then flying to MCO, are they supposed to also have their passport on hand? I know some people who are insisting they don't need it.

That is correct. You do not need a passport to cross by land with Nexus. You also do not need a passport to fly domestically within the U.S.

Having said that, I would personally not do it, because the passport is the more recognizable document if you need to prove citizenship. Plus if you had to return home quickly, flying directly to Canada would not be possible. But it is legally/ technically possible.

We had our NEXUS cards for two years now and have yet to use them. Everytime we cross the NEXUS lane is closed. We have gone by land, air and sea and every time it is closed. Must be my luck eh.

I do find though that when we cross I put my card in with my passport when I hand it over and seem to get asked fewer questions so I do tend to get through quickly.

We were told that anytime we used our Nexus cards that we had to have our passports available in case we were asked, even though they rarely ask for them apparently. Nexus just gets you through a quicker line; it doesn't totally negate the need for passports. I would take it with me just in case. Better safe than sorry.
