If you make $48,000 a year, you are in the top 1% annual income in the entire world.

In fact, if you make just $10 an hour and work full time, you are in the top 12% in the world.

Some perspective ---> http://globalrichlist.com/

There are many factors to take into acct when defining if one is rich, income is only one of them.

True in western countries - not in the rest of the world, where being able to afford food and shelter makes one a very rich man...

I fear this thread is going to get ugly...
BUT, that statistic makes me feel a bit better about my wages!

My point is that they shouldn't ask "how rich are you?" because one making in the top 1% isn't always rich ;)

But the OP didn't say anything about rich; merely that

That's it - just annual income. Not riches. Not wealth. Just what one earns annually ranked worldwide.

I'm not talking about the OP, I'm talking about the website she linked to (Global rich List). Did you check it, the question posed is "how rich are you" and then you plug in your income and your country. Sorry, thought ot was pretty obvious what I was referring to.

Good point.

It doesn't make me stop wishing for more money, but it does make me grateful to be living here where salary opportunities are so high.

The point of the site is to compare our relative state to those in other parts of the world. If you are in the top 1%, you are rich. Just ask someone in the bottom 1%. ;)

Whenever I am feeling stresses about finances I try to remember how blessed we are compared to much of the world. Thanks for the reminder.

You are right and I can ask someone in the top 1% and get the same answer that those in the bottom 1% give.

You can compare income with other parts of the world and be in the top 1% of income earners however that doesn't mean you are "rich". So again, the website uses the wrong terminology, thats my point.

Heh, this made me chuckle. I'm so strapped I can't afford to pay attention, but I'm still within the top 10% of the world (tho just barely). Yay me. :rolleyes1

Sometimes its easy to forget what real poverty is......

:thumbsup2 Agreed!

No, it uses a different definition of the word "rich" than that which those of us in the western world apply. Again, the ability to feed and provide shelter for one's family makes one a very rich man in most of the world. Income provides that means, as they have no way of accumulating what we would call wealth.

The word rich applies very well, as they understand wealth to be something very different. Words like "rich" have very different meanings to different people.

Not arguing, just clarifying the point of the site.

That site should have used "wealthy/wealthiest". Rich isn't always about money. Just ask George Bailey ;)

Still wouldn't work because wealth is determined by many factors as well. They should have just left it at a comparison of income, and those in the top 1% would be the highest income earners in the world. There are no other definitions of income, it means the same to all.

Seems that it would be safe to say that "in this instance 'wealth'/'rich' is referring to income".

There are many ways to define riches or wealth but the amount of income or money one has IS one of those ways (for some people anyway).

And I agree that we should remember when we are feeling "poor" what poor really is. My brother worked on an oil rig off the coast of Africa. He had to fly into the country (I don't remember which one exactly) and then be taken to the heliport to go to the rig. They went through several villages to get to the heli-port and he would tell us how heartbreaking it was to see the poverty these people lived in. It made the men feel guilty that they were in their country earing a fairly large sum of money. He was always amazed at how happy they seemed though.
