He says Shanghai is around 90% done.

He also says Disney is looking at selling ESPN directly to consumers instead of it being part of a cable package.

So basically Disney finally read the writing on the wall. I'm glad they are trying to take some initiative and get ahead of the whole 'cutting the cord' issue.

Though we knew that already. Their new CFO announced that not last quarter, but the quarter before. So not a surprise.

Yes but ESPN forces its content on subscribers in the number of channels and the tiers they require. The future is streaming and ESPN just might make it easier if they move to a newer business model. Others will follow suit.

I dunno who/what I should quote/tag at this point, but I'd like to add my two cents and say I think @rteetz does a great job with this thread! Tons of updates everyday provide me with lots of entertainment at work (er lets just say "at my computer" instead) and spark some good, some silly and some eye-brow raising conversation. As a daily reader of this thread, I appreciate links to other Disney-related material (especially from a source I already count as reliable). As others have said, this thread has a history of having some leeway for what's discussed and how "rumory" or "newsy" it is...that's partially why this is a fun and busy thread. Additionally, if something has gotten TOO off topic or if a topic has started taking up a lot of real estate, rteetz uses his discretion and moves the conversation to a new thread. So in short: leave him alone! He knows what he's doing and we all like it!

Leave our moderator alone! He is the only one that keeps the news and rumors going. I also highly enjoy the regular posters with their wit, sarcasm and lack of couth. I check this thread 5-10 times a day. If rteetz posts 1 out of 200 "off topic", I think we are doing just fine.

Interesting. Wifi is more and more becoming free at most hotels and resorts. It figures though that they finally would try to figure out a way to charge for ME. Get everyone hooked first then bury the fee.

I'm afraid Disney is slowly but surely milking their "Cash Cows" (Us) to death.
I know people who are certified Disney addicts planning their FL vacation at Universal and the beach this year instead of WDW.
Maybe it's time for Iger, et al, to take a step back and learn to live with their already excessive incomes instead of turning their guests upside down and shaking them to get their last nickel.

Offsite hotels may charge extra for some things, but their nightly charge is significantly less than Disney. The wifi thing could backfire on them. I don't think I would pay it. I would just use my data at the hotel and use the wifi at the park or a restaurant. We rent a car anyway, so I don't care about ME anymore. We have never done the children's activities at WDW, because they usually don't have anything or anything interesting going on while we are swimming or we are at the parks. Nickel and dime me death, will ya

That's just great, push more and more planning/functions to the Internet and then charge you to use them.

Thanks! I'm feeling ambitious and may go Dopey next year.

I started running pretty regularly 2 years ago with the intent of being able to do a half marathon at Disney. I got up to around 7 miles without stopping before I had to have emergency gallbladder surgery and never recovered. I don't see myself every being able to run a full. The race it's self might be entertaining enough, but the training is so boring. I really want to do a Run-Disney event someday, but I just don't know if I can get to that level at my age.

If ESPN does this, it will be a major shift in the industry. I'm all for a la carte, but the major programmers have resisted. ESPN could set it all in motion.

in the beginning disney chanel was an additional pay chanel. those were the days before they decided to dumb down the chanel and aim it at tweens. I think if they became an HBO type pay for chanel as well as offer ways to stream it on other media, it would work. not sure how much per month they would ask but I bet there would be enough customers to make it profitable to do this

I think we're all willing to give you a pass considering you run this thread for all of us, and quite well. I enjoyed it.

Ryan, thank you for posting your article about the runDisney events. I found it to be very informative and useful for me. Two of my loves: Disney and running races. The runDisney calendar that you attached in the article is useful to have as well. Just as your news/preview of ROL was beneficial to me, so was your Disney running events article. They both assist me in my Disney planning and were both news to me.
