News Round Up 2016

Does anyone seriously think Shanghai is going to open with glowing praise and minimal negative reviews? These budget cuts are going to be around through at least September, and I can only imagine how prominent it's going to be during the peak season.

I think it will depend on what press you read. Inside Communist China, I doubt locals see much bad press regardless of what reality is since the government controls the press and wants the park to succeed. For us, I am sure we will hear tons of negative press but that won't really matter since their government routinely blocks access to things from outside of China.

Even if the park opens with tons of walls and attractions that haven't launched yet, the average local visitor will have seen nothing like it and will be impressed. The park is HUGE. Even with attractions held back, there will be plenty for people to do.

That's true, but we also have to remember that when Hong Kong first opened it was heavily criticized for having very few attractions. I think this could also apply to Shanghai. Sure, they'll have shows, parades and a few attractions to distract the people for a couple of months, but if demand is heavy will that be enough?

Top of, things that will never happen list.
Seriously now...how many people in Bob's position would cut their own salary. I find it hilarious when people say things like this. There is few "saints" that would actually ever even contemplate doing this. In fact most would find ways to make it look like they cut their salary, but in fact found some back end way to actually increase their salary. You know every year politicians increase their salary more than they increase that of govt workers.

Well, I was joking, but then again, Iger is one of the most overpaid CEO's in the world. I'm sure he has a few spare dollars to share ;)

Exactly, will never happen

Not on the same level but in my previous career I was part of the senior management team of a wholesale distributor (roughly $75 Million in revenue so obviously nowhere near Disney size). We had a tough start to 2013 and chose to put a freeze on hiring and pay increases (including mgmt) and cut other expenses. By the end of the year we had cut enough expenses and sales had rebounded a bit and we hit our bonus targets for the Sr. Mgmt group. We unanimously decided to not take the bonuses as it didn't feel right. We then lifted the pay increase freeze.

Had things not improved I for one would have suggested that mgmt take a pay cut before we consider layoffs or pay reductions for the regular staff. I think our mgmt team would have been in favor of that. I would hardly call us saints, but I guess I'm surprised that the majority of folks in that position wouldn't look at it that way. Needless to say, I'm slightly disappointed in Disney's actions here.

Coral Reef was our worst meal this past December, and we ate at about a dozen restaurants. Glad others have enjoyed it though. The fish were fun to look at =)
Funny it was the same for us last November! We were there for 10 days and ate at over a dozen table service restaurants. It was the absolute worst. The only thing that was good about it was the aquarium.

Permits

Two permits were filed today for Flight of Passage theming and show set installation. The expiration dates still say December 31st, 2018. The company doing them however is not someone who usually does Disney parks work rather has done restaurants, museums and Universal Studios work.

What's Flight of Passage?

Perhaps Disney's usual contractors will be working on Toy Story/Star Wars by the time they start wrapping up Pandora :confused3

With this permit filing now that means they are starting this as soon as it gets approved. I don't think it has to do with work at DHS but maybe the nature of the work being done with this new ride. It's possible their typical contractors can't do the work needed for this ride.
