Wow.
That's alot of money, considering that 3 years ago, a little movie based upon a pirate theme park ride was the laughing stock of the film industry.
Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest has smashed the record for the highest grossing opening day creating a new box office record.
The film earned a unprecedented $54.8 million from 4,133 theaters (that's a single day per theater average of $13,271).
The film beat the one day record held by 2005's Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith, which made $50 million. Pirates exceeded that figure by almost 10$, with an estimated $55.5 million.
If no one went to the movie theater on Saturday and Sunday, and the film just made $54.8 million for the weekend, it would still be the 42nd largest opening ever recorded. The first day total surpasses Superman Returns's first three day total ($48.4 million).
It is almost a certainty now that the film will break Spider-Man's three-day opening weekend record of $114.84 million from 2002. In fact, the movie only needs to make $59 million more. And you figure, that with it's first day total nearing $55 million, that can't pose a problem.
Industry analysis's' conservative estimates predict that the film will make $125 million over the weekend. More realistic precitions point the figure somewhere at around $135 million.
