Newport vs. New York?

We're seriously debating a short trip in November (DS is really hoping that Jack Skellington will be dressed as Sandy Claws)...and considering the HNY this time.

We've stayed at the Newport before, and thought it was nice enough....and have stayed at Sequoia twice (most recently last week, so we want to try something different). And using the deal on the Irish site, either will include half board.

I'm torn between paying a bit less and going with the Newport (week of Nov. 19-22, 2 adults/1 11 yo) for 923€ but then my guys sure do love bacon and sausages...so HNY calls their names with its hot breakfast at only 1008€ for a standard room, or 1157€ for a Plaza room...which from my understanding the only benefit to that is a lake view? Is there more a plaza room offers than the view?

Thoughts? Benefits of staying at one over the other? Any input from those who have stayed at both, particularly during the holidays? Does one have more impressive Christmas decos than the other? We're big into meeting characters, most at the Newport were nautical themed...and the HNY?
TIA!:)

We've stayed at both and have chosen the HNY for our Christmas trip, mainly for its proximity to the park when the weather is likely to be cold but also for the nicer breakfast areas and hot options included. You can buy a hot breakfast option at the NBC for about 4 euros but the setting is much nicer IMHO at the HNY.

We have never had a Plaza room but I think the only advantage is the lake view and we have had rooms looking out on the courtyard garden to the Village side of the hotel which is very quiet and still provides a glimpse of the lake area so have been very happy there.

Having not stayed at the HNY before over the Christmas season I'm waiting to see which characters are there but the hotel has always looked very festive from the outside. :santa:

Let's not forget the rehab of the hotel :
"Disney's Newport Bay Hotel:
Indoor swimming pool, jacuzzi, sauna & steam room will be closed in Nov 2013 - until further notice.
The East aisle (524 rooms) will be closed for refurbishment from 1 November 2013 until further notice. During this period the following facilities will be closed: outdoor pool; indoor pool and whirlpool; sauna and steambath; massage; fitness room; game room."
(it cames from the UK DLP website, as quoted in a French Forum)

With the big rehab of the NPB starting in November meaning that the leisure facilities and one wing of the hotel will be closed, I would probably go with the HNY - but just a standard room, I wouldn't pay extra to look over the ice rink!

Oh my...I didn't realize the refurb in the NPB was starting in Novemeber...so I think that alone will decide it for me. :rotfl:

Honestly, I was leaning more toward the HNY, so I'm rather pleased with the input. I think that hot breakfast alone will more than make up for the $100 difference. Thanks for helping me decide!! Much appreciate. :thumbsup2:santa:

I'd be choosing HNY in the winter months, the walk to NPB is pleasant in summer but not so much the rest of the year! Plus you've got the hot breakfast. :)

My family & l stayed at HNY last week (14th -18th Oct) - we loved it. :thumbsup2 Our room no. 4225 was in the Midtown section, 4th floor, it was a standard room, from our window we could see the castle in the distance.
Breakfasts were very good - we were in both the Parkside Diner & Manhattan Restaurant - relaxing, could have stayed in there all morning.
Also really liked the New York City Bar. Room service good too.
Given it's proximity to Disney Village l think HNY is a great choice for a November trip. I so want to go back. :cloud9:

- will add some photos in a min.

I've got a question, but....Since when can't you have a hot breakfast at the NBC ?
I remember, when I was a kid (so, yeah, at least 16 years back :p ), it was a warm breakfast .....Or maybe I'm just dreaming ?

Pretty certain it's always been like that as originally it was only the DLH which had hot items included then the HNY, SL and NPB has been a supplement

Thanks for all the great info! :thumbsup2

Side note....is the hot breakfast at HNY the same/similar to the one served at DLH? Or do they offer anything different?

Pretty sure it is except they don't have pancakes like they do in DLH

Last week at HNY the hot items available at breakfast were sausages, bacon, sauté potatoes & scrambled egg.

I've been using the Irish site to price out the trip in question...and I can't for the life of me find out where/if it states on the site when the current deal will end (20% off with half board)...is my eyesight getting worse? :badpc:

Can someone tell me when this deal ends?

Had a quick look on the Irish site & couldn't see a date, but on the UK site it says for 20% off book by 6th November, maybe the date for the Irish site will be different though. :confused3

Thank you! Glad to know I'm not the only one not seeing it.
I need to book ASAP, but still waiting on my husband to put in for leave...I'm getting nervous it'll expire or fill up before I get to it. :faint:
