Would like to do a trip there. Would be flying out of Memphis, probably in September. Is this a good time and which airport? Providence? Any other info would be welcomed! I know absolutely nothing about this part of the country!

September is beautiful around here! Yes, Providence (TF Green, actually in Warwick, but called Providence) would be the closest and it's a nice small, easy in, easy out airport.

Check out GoNewport.com for lots and lots of info. Depending on who's in your party, the mansions are a must-do! Little kids might get bored, but older kids and adults will love it. Brick Market area is great for shopping and sitting by the water. A harbor tour is very relaxing. Tennis Hall of Fame if anyone's interested. Sachuest Point and Second Beach are beautiful--I think that's actually Middletown, the next town over from Newport.

And Rhode Island is so small, you can get anywhere in an hour or less. Lots to do in Providence--restaurants, RISD museum, Providence Performing Arts Center. Also look at Little Compton and Tiverton--beautiful beach towns, little shops, wineries. Could even do a day trip to Block Island.

Thanks so much for such a quick reply! It would be just me and my cousin, and we are both retired, so I was thinking September might be good to avoid summer/school crowds. I assume I would have to rent a car to get to Newport from the airport? Or are there other options? And is Newport a good walking town? I assume there are tours that provide transportation if needed? Thanks!

Also the Newport Mansions are a great experience. Have fun, we are fortunate to live an hour and a half away and visit Newport as a day trip.

September is a great time to visit Newport. The summer crowds are gone, but if you go in early September it still may be warm enough to hit the beach (weve had a lot of warm weather in September in New England the past few years). You would definitely need a car to get from the airport to Newport. Once in Newport, you will still need your car to get to various places. We live within 2 hours of Newport so weve made plenty of day trips there. Its a great place! Make sure you check out the Newport Mansions!

You'll definitely need to rent a car. Although there may be tours that take you around the city to various highlights, you'll still want a car for your stay. There are sections of town that are great for walking--such as Brick Marketplace and the waterfront, and also Bellevue Avenue with the mansions--but you'll need a car to get from area to area.

You'll LOVE the mansions!!!!

Newport is a great walking town, but you cannot walk to all of Newport's attractions. I know that there are bus companies out there that may offer package tours of Newport, this would be something to think about, but you might really enjoy exploring Newport on your own. You can pick of a rental at TFG airport, and the drive from Warwick to Newport is not too bad. I know that you would really enjoy Newport's 12 mile drive along the coastline..if you are driving you can get out of the car, and really enjoy the beautiful scenery, and take some great photos. Have a wonderful trip!

Check out Waterford as well. Its in Providence which is about a 40minute drive but worth it.

You might want to check prices for flying into Boston rather than Providence; it can be significantly cheaper.

Definitely compare prices but if it's within a twenty or thirty bucks go for TF Green. We live halfway between the two airports and use both depending upon ticket price and convenience of the flights. All in all if it's close to even then we'll go with TF Greeen. We find that TF Green is a MUCH friendlier airport. So easy to get to so easy to get in and out of so easy to navigate once you are inside.

Also on a driving basis, TF Green MUCH, MUCH, MUCH closer to Newport. Because TF Green is actually south of Providence no matter what the arrival time you could be in Newport in hour (or less) but from Boston (because you'd have to go thru both Boston and Providence) if the arrival time is at rush hour Newport could be up to three hours away.

On another note, when in Newport make sure to check out Fort Adams State Park. There are also tons of revolutionary war sites in the city as well.

I did check Boston after the suggestion above, but it's actually about $100 more. By TF Green, do you mean the Providence airport (PVD)? I want to be as close as possible to Newport.

That would be pretty terrible traffic; I've made the drive from Boston-Newport a number of times in about 1 1/2 hours.

OP, TF Green is the airport in Providence.

TFGreen airport is referred to as Providence (PVD), but it is actually in Warwick, RI. It is very easy to get in and out of this airport. Forget about Boston; even it it were cheaper it would not be worth it...it is a traffic nightmare.

Also check out Southwest airlines -they fly into PVD, I try to avoid Boston Logan airport like the plague. Not worth it, as pp said. It only takes once in three hour traffic, and you'll fly from other airports. Go with TF Green (PVD) and save your sanity. Have a great trip!

I'm interested in any suggestions for places to stay or things to do. We like to walk so we would love to be in an area where we can walk. Thanks.

I agree, avoid Boston Logan Airport. The money saved isn't worth the hassle. With a car you can also explore parts of Mass.

Plymouth Plantation is about a 45 min ride and a great day trip. http://www.plimoth.org/

Sturbridge village, http://www.osv.org/ is just about an hr and half.

While staying in Newport eat at Flo's clam shack

It was one of the food channel shows, I think it was Man vs Food. My family has been going here for years.

Check out the following link about Newport's Cliff Walk..a must do..spectacular views of ocean and mansions.

Also, there are many boat tours that depart from the main docks near the Brick Market...I would certainly put this on my 'to do list, and there's always the Jamestown ferry...check out this link http://www.jamestownnewportferry.com/lower-narragansett-bay-ferry-stops/

LOVE Newport! It is a great place for a little "girls" get away. ;)

We stayed at the Hyatt Regency on Goat Island. We walked everywhere! It was a bit of a hike, but we even walked to the mansions one day. Goat Island looks further on the map than it actually is - it's just a bridge away from the mainland. It's a very pretty and nice hotel!

Have a great trip!
