I have an Andy too. He likes being called AJ for Andrew Joseph. AJ is five and allergic to dogs.
When he was 8 months old, after visiting my parents, he would wind up in the hospital. The symptoms were always "cold and asthma like."
This happened about 5 times between 8 months and 2 years old. DS was preemie, born at 30 weeks and only 3lbs. We thought it was the Maryland air, we are from Jersey, or the drive. Well we finally smartened up and took him to a pediatric pulmonologist and allergist who tested him for everything under the sun. We found he was alleric to grass, trees, mold and severely allergic to dogs.
Over the last three years he has outgrown the grass trees and mold and his dog allergy is moderate instead of severe. We triage everty situation before we leave the house. We ask before every playdate or event if dogs will be present. If they are, 24 hours before we must give him zyrtec and take his nebulizer. If a friend has a dog, we have the play dates at our house.
I agree with tracking the triggers and changes in behavior and moods. my DS was never around the dogs and my mom's home is super clean, but just being there used to trigger attackes very bad that we stayed at hotels instead of their home. it's better now but we are still very cautious.
