someone just recently suggested rentimg points as a way to save $, and at first glance, this could be an option for us...

If we use David's, for Example, then we can we purchase park tix and meal plan through an agent? Or do we need to book that direct through Disney?

We are going to need some guidance through the rest of the process like ADR and FP so I jiust want to make sure we can still have someone heLp with that if we use another party to rent DVC points.

Hope this makes sense!!

We rented points for our trip next month. We started out with David's and their customer service was fantastic. Unfortunately, they did not have the room at the resort at which I wanted to stay(VGF). We rented privately via the rent/trade board here on the DIS. We bought our tickets through Undercover Tourist. As soon as the reservation was made, it showed up in MDE. When I purchased our tickets, I linked them into MDE. I made our ADRs at 180 days and FP+ at 60 days with no problems using the MDE website. You would need to have to owner of the points purchase your meal plan for you to add to your reservation. David's process makes it all very easy.

'Renting points' is a bit of a misnomer; what you're actually doing is paying a DVC owner to make a reservation for you with their points. Companies like David's act as a broker to match up owners who have points to rent, with vacationers looking to rent.

You would need to book the dining plan with David's. A travel agent would not be able to do this for you; DVC will only allow the member that owns your reservation to make any changes to it.

I believe David's sells tickets, so you can get them there, or anywhere else you'd like. On Disney's site, through an authorized ticket seller like Undercover Tourist, or at your resort or any WDW theme park, or at Downtown Disney.

As for help with booking FP's and ADRs, you'll find that the good folks on the Theme Parks and Dining Reservations boards here on the DIS know a lot more about the process than some travel agents do, and they'll be delighted to help. :)

The 2 biggest things to remember when renting points is (1)you have to pay in full up front when the reservation is made, and (2)changes and cancellations are not allowed and your payment is non-refundable. If you're going to rent DVC points, make sure that your plans are set in stone. It's a fantastic way to save quite a bit of money on some really nice deluxe accomodations if your travel plans are solid.

There's much more about this on the DVC forum pages - there's a really handy sticky at the top of one of those with pretty much all the info you need.

If you managed to find this discussion board, you can probably figure out how to navigate ADRs, FP+, ticket info, etc - by yourself if you have the time to read. I've rented from both a company and private owners - but booked everything else myself directly through Disney (well, except ME when booking on points).

We've rented points through David's several times and never had any problems. The one biggest drawback, that was already mentioned, is not being able to cancel or change your dates or resort. Make sure you know what you want before you book, and travel insurance is a good idea in this case.

We have never added the DDP through them, though I know they offer it. We have added DME a couple of times though, and we just buy our tickets from UCT and link them ourselves. Everything else (MBs, FPs, ADRs, etc) work exactly the same as if you booked through Disney, once you link the resort ressie in MDE.

Depending on the time of year and what discounts are offered it can save you a LOT. When we went just before Christmas last year, we paid less than half what we would have to get the same room at WL through Disney.

There are rental companies (such as DVC Rental Store) that do not require full payment at the time of rental. They also do not charge you to search for a reservation like David's. When we rented, DVC Rental lets you pay 50% down and then the final amount is due 45 days before check-in. You can also get cancellation insurance through them, a rarity in the DVC rental market.
