Newbie SLR websites?

I took the plunge, and got myself a Canon XS. At this point, I'm completely overwhelmed and am glad I didn't get a fancier model. I'm reading the manual, but is there a good website out there for DSLR newbies?

I leave in 3 weeks for my land and sea trip, and I'm panicking that I would be better off with my P&S!

Thank you, this is what I was looking for!

Obviously, I did a search on the major search engines, but was finding mostly reviews or tutorials that were for advanced techniques. I was having trouble finding a site that was for beginners.

One of the great things about learning on digital cameras instead of on film is that electrons are reusable

Once you uncover a technique on a website or from a book (our local library branch had a nice selection of books on both camera use and image editing software) you can just go try it a time or two or 100...and it really doesn't cost anything.

Before you are comfortable with all the settings don't be afraid to set the camera on 'P' and let the camera do most of the calculatin' - it will do a pretty good job.

The best part about being at the bottom of the learning curve is that you'll be learning fast!

I know it may seem a little corny, but I would suggest "Canon XS for Dummies." I bought the book for my T1i, and I still can't believe how much I learned from it.

I second the For Dummies book. I bought it when I got my XS and it's been a huge help. I also bought Davis Busch's Canon XS book. Between both of these I've been able to do more than I ever thought I could with my new camera and can't wait for my Nov. trip to try out some new tricks!

Thanks for the tips on the books. I went to town this morning and the library is going to get them in for me, so hopefully within a week I should have them.

On the upside, after staying up late and reading lots on the web, I went to my DS's little league football game this morning. I was very happy with my pics! I only have my kit lens, so most of the pics are taken from pretty far away, but they are in focus. If I try to crop them down to get closer, they do get blurry at that point. I did get a couple when the action was by the sideline, and I am thrilled with those!

So anxious to learn more!

I have recently purchased the XS and am learning how to use it. I have the Dummies book and refer to it often. I also have several wesites to look at including Photography-on-the-Net , and Camera Labs .
The camera is getting a good workout with our first granddaughter and I can hardly wait to take to WDW.

I need to learn post-processing and the new thread started on this subject is appreciated.
We also are using the Canon 50mm f1.8 II.

Is this how the depth of field should turn out?
I know this is an entry-level DSLR, but it is what I want in a camera right now.
