Please clarify for me -- journal box is usually defined as 4x3 writing area double matted.

So say I have a white 4x3 rectangle for writing, I then mat with, for example, a red 4.25 x 3.25 rectangle and then a black 4.5 x 3.5 rectangle or is is it just the first two layers, white & red?

I was wondering the same thing a while back. If you look at the swap glossary sticky and follow the links for journaling boxes there are some of each. Some have two layers, and some have three.

It means your writing surface, and then two colors. The same would be true for a photo mat. Two colors to show around the photo.

I guess I've been doing wrong then. I considered my journalling area to be 1 layer. OOPS! ;)

Me too

I just looked at the swap index, and on 2 peas. It shows both, journaling box as 1 layer, with embelishment and a mat. Also several mat layers behind box, but these weren't as detailed with embelishments (though some were), just some brads, no fibers... My suggestion is if you like it, would want it in your book, and think it's enough, everyone else will too.

I did the 3 total layers because I wanted to play it safe. I did however think that the journal box was a little different than the photomats and that the writing area would count as the first layer.

I really don't think there is a right or wrong way to do it. As long as there is a bit of embellishment on it, I think you'll be ok.

The best thing I have found about these swaps is all the different styles everyone has. Some people are more simple, some are big and bold, some are into new techniques. I love seeing what comes in my swap box. It's like Christmas, and my Bday all rolled into one! :teeth:

I've just been putting one layer behind the mats - i hope this hasn't offended anyone! I have enough trouble working out my supplies for that without trying to do the maths for a third layer:rotfl: I thought some poeple would be printing off journalling and sticking it on the mat:confused3

Mine usually consist of one mat around the journaling area and then the second mat around that being a larger area where I put most of my embellishing. (normally larger on just one side, so it ends up a rectangle instead of a square)

But not always, so I'm in the thinking that if I would use it, you would use it too camp.

Well, Buffy and Deb we are in the same boat.. I've been doing it the same way you have...

I know some of us print out our journaling so I figured that was the "third" layer in all this.

Personally, I don't mind them either way... double matted (includes the journal area) or triple matted (journal area & 2 layers under it)...

Yup, double matted is usually considered three colors / sheets of paper...the top one that the photo or journaling goes on, and then two additional layers. :)

Obviously at this point in the MK swap, double matting for the journal boxes is however you've defined it. ;)

I've always done 3 layers because someone told me that's what it meant. However, since I haven't cut the final layer for my journal boxes yet, I might just skip a layer...we'll see.

Well I learned something new! I too was counting the first layer that you would journal on as one of the layers.

Personally, I think until the definition in the Swap Term Glossary thread is changed it should continue to be up to the discretion of the person making the item. Otherwise, how can we be sure we're on the same page?

Besides, if the Swap Goddess :worship: :worship: is counting the journaling as a layer then shouldn't we all bow to her way of doing things?? :worship: :worship:

:lmao: :lmao: :lmao:

And who are we to argue with the Swap Goddess? ;)

This is just my 2 cents so please don't get upset, it has been my experience in the past that a double mat means you place 2 mats below whatever you are working on so in most cases there would be three layers of something. Except in a case of a photo mat beasue the photo is your top layer and then you have two mats. Does that make sense?

But I am new here and I am learning the norms for this board. However, I think everyone's interpretation of things are great ansd it will be so wonderful to have things that all aren't just the same. Think about it - do we all really need toppers that are 8 X 2 - double matted? How about some useful parameters. Like I had thought about stringing small matted tags together to make a title but wasn't sure if that would count or not.

Personally, I would rather see quality work that was thoughtfully done insteda of something slapped together so that person can get good stuff in return - I haven't seen that on this board and am soooo relieved.

Sorry for the ramble. I felt I was starting into a panic attack early this afternoon and have medicated myself. I have decided it is not wise to get out the Cricut tonight as I ruined 2 sheets of the 1.00 candy coated paper - and am gluing and reading a book instead.

On to swaps in the AM after our church service groups go to take flowers to nursing homes in honor of mother's day.

Count me in with Buffy and the others - I have been counting my top layer as one. I did think about it for early items but sometimes that third mat just looks like overkill. I'm of the mindset that if it looks complete, then there is no need to add a layer just for layers sake.

I can change the Swap Glossary definition, just tell me what you would like it to say.

I thought i was going by the definition - so if it's clarified and I cut less paper - that is a double bonus - less time and less expense
