Newbie question on waitlists

If you don't have that many points (say 50 a year) and book at your home resort for 'safety', how do you waitlist at the 7 month mark for another resort? Does the computer automatically assume the waitlist will use borrowed points? If so, assuming you GET the waitlist later, are the points used the current years points or the points that you borrowed? I ask because if you are forced to use the 'borrowed' points then you would be stuck with the current years points near expiration wouldn't you? Sorry for such a basic question, I am brand new at ownership.

If you have the proper use year, you should have plenty of time to bank those current year points.

Borrowed points would be worse; they’d be stuck in that use year and could not be banked. Hence, the system uses them first.

When you set up a waitlist, you can specify that you want to replace an existing reservation. That way, the points from one will be used to book the waitlisted room.

Once points are borrowed, they can't be unborrowed. So if you make your reservation at home for say 52 points, borrowing 2 points, and waitlist to get a standard view BWV room that would be 48 points, you can't unborrow the 2 points. MS will (SHOULD, but check) use the 2 borrowed points first, then your 46 unborrowed points, leaving you with 4 points to bank - if the reservation comes though. And you are still within your banking window. If your banking window has passed when (if) the waitlist comes though, you'll just be out the four points.

Personally, I think its a little risky and complicated which is one of the reasons "buy where you want to stay and then plan ahead" comes in.
