I'm really new at this. I read that the CMs have to take a trade if they don't have the pin you want to trade already on their lanyard. Is this true? What about the CMs on the Disney Cruise - same thing? Do the pins from the cruise trade better? Are their books out there that are about the pins and their values? Any other info I need??? Thank you for your help.

Hi Michelle and welcome to pin trading!!

Yes a CM has trade for any DISNEY pin not on their lanyard. The pin must say (c) Disney on the back. I believe this is the same for the Cruise CMs also. Generally the Cruiseline pins trade well because they are harder to get. A book about pins is difficult as there are so many new ones coming out all the time. I would venture to guess that between now and X-mas there will be around 500 pins released when you add up what is released at each of the 4 parks and the Disney Stores.

I would recommend 2 websites for further info. www.pinpics.com and www.dizpins.com PinPics is a database of over 6000 different Disney pins that have been released over the years with new ones added everyday. DizPins is a news and information site that posts info about new releases and has guidlines on pin trading etc. You can always post any questions you have here. There are many kind, hepful, experienced pin traders here that are more than willing to help.

Reccomendation: Buy/collect what you like. Don't try to get every Disney pin. (Disney doesn't even know how many pins it has released over the years!) Focus on a theme, princesses, WDW, attractions, hotels, Holidays, Villains :D , etc.

Most of all have fun!!

Okay a newbie and I got to her first. Well second only cause I don't type as fast as Dom.

Hi Michelle

Yes the CM's will take your pin as long as it's a Disney pin, old, new from Disney Japan California Cruise line, whatever as long as its a Disney pin they take it. The exception to the rule is they sell these rubber pins or name pins those are not for trade. The rule applies that as long as they do not already have that pin on their lanyard they will trade.

If you come to Florida you will see that almost every lanyard has a default dancing 2000 pin on each and every lanyard, Disney did this because a local discount house was selling those pins for .99 cents. Somebody I would say several people bought hundreds of these pins and was trading those for lanyard pins, then selling them on ebay. So you see by putting one on each lanyard they cant accept that pin for trade anymore.

I have never been on a cruise, but the lanyard rules should apply, the only time I have been told different was at a Disney Store, they told me those were for show only, and only certain stores would be doing the lanyards for trade. Also during special events they bring out prototype pins on lanyards that are not for trade.

Yes cruise line pins are more desirable, because not everybody gets to go on the cruise, and they only sell them onboard ship. For a small time there they sold them at one of the resorts but they were pulled once the word got out.

There are two publications out there that I know of that talk about pins but the names escape me I'm sure others out there know which ones I'm talking about. One has information on pins the other has actual pin values.

The best way I learned was to do research on Pinpics.com they have the best collection of pin information, or go to Ebay and see what they are selling for. You would be surprised what people will pay for a pin. Example go to Ebay do a search for Mickey for President Pin.

Now for the fun stuff if you ever get to Florida, I would be honored to take you under the wings of the Contemporary Collecting Contingency. We have a meet every Friday night, and we can take you around and show you the ins and out of trading… you are guaranteed a great time but be prepared to laugh a lot.
