I am real new to this. My family of 4 is planning on heading to WDW for the first time in May. We have never flown as a family and I don't know what I am doing. :confused3 I always thought if I got my airline tickets early I would get the best rate. Is that not true? I am seeing people saying they got "dinged" a great rate. what is that? Please help me. I want this to go well so I can get my husband back every few years. We live In Salem Oregon. Quite a trip. Thanks (Also will take any other great money saving tips if you have them.)

Unless you are flying on Memorial Day weekend, best fares for May will come up on Sale late march and early April. We recently got very lucky and flew California to Orlando for $218 nonstop.

Since Southwest flies out of Portland, you should be seeing some sale fares around $228-$268(depending on day of the week)in May, not an exceptionally busy month for WDW.

One way to see how the fares will be is to check today to see what the rates are if you were flying a month or two from now. Will give you somewhat of an idea as to what to expect a month or two before you actually fly.

P.s. since you're new at this:

Sometimes you'll find a good rate really far in advance, but most good fares are NONREFUNDABLE. So if you book too early, you stand to lose a lot of money if you change or cancel your plans.
Southwest Airlines will give you a credit if you change your plans, but usually this credit needs to be used to fly again within a year...not a true refund.

Our May 2007 just kept climbing, so we jumped in and purchased a bit early. But we are flying out Memorial weekend, so I can't imagine the fares dropping.

Thanks, that is what I really needed to know. I guess I will keep checking but not settle too early unless it is a really great rate. Right now if I bought the tickets to Orlando they run about $400.00. Too much, so I will just keep waiting.

We live in Salem, Oregon too.We always fly SW. Last trip the best I could get was 92.00 each way, that's still pretty good compared to the rest of the airlines and what they charge. Our last trip was over spring break of 06.We're going again spring break of 07... Can't wait
