I am almost certain that this question has been asked and answered before, but could not find it on the search. Let's assume I have 100 points but need 104 for a particular stay. I could borrow points but would rather not. Can I just pay $40 for the 4 points I am short? Or, do I have to knock off the night I am short and pay for that entire night with cash? I know I can borrow and rent, but for the sake of argument, assume that I don't want to do either.

Thanks for your help!

Sorry, no. You cannot just pay cash to make up for the points that you are short. You could "rent" some points from another member and have them transferred into your account, though. Then you could use those in combination with your own points to complete the reservation. If you go that route, be sure the points will work for the resort and time you want to stay.

In short, you cannot mix cash and points to pay for the same night.

Just to explain a little, Point stays and cash stays come from different inventory.

Geezer is right. Point reservations and cash reservations come from different inventory. The only way to do this is to either borrow points or rent points, as suggested by Carol.

For the situation noted, just borrowing the points is the best approach. If you get in a situation where you really need to stretch or save points, paying cash for weekends is the best way to do that.

Cash stays booked through MS can come from the same inventory as the point stays. MS can book a cash stay from either developer's inventory or points inventory. (There are certain criteria that must be satisfied for that to happen, though).

I agree that the majority of rooms available for cash are booked via CRO. The inventory of those rooms comes mostly from members who decide to use points to pay for some of the non-DVC options.
