For my 40th birthday, my DH is bringing me to NYC. We are staying at Marriott Marquis right in Times Square and we are going to see THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA. YEAH!!! I have not really been to the city and was wondering if anyone could help us out about any good "inexpensive" resturants, a deli or even pizzarias in the Times Square area. Also, anyother tips or suggestions. We are only staying overnight, getting there about noon with a 8pm show and heading back home in the morning.

Thanks for any info you can give!!

You'll LOVE the Phantom! One of my favorites!! However, I doubt you'll find anything "cheap" in NYC. Especially Times Square.

The best pizzeria is John's, on 44th and 8th!

It's in a converted church and quite nice. The pizza is good too!

I love the marriot marquis and I love Phantom of the Opera! you're going to have a great trip.

places to eat in the area:

Ollie's -- inexpensive but very good Chinese food. it's on 44th between 7th and 8th. or try John's Pizza on 44th and 8th, it's a sit down restaurant with brick oven pizza. Ellen's stardust diner 0on 51st, traditional diner foods and the home of the singing waitstaff. Carmine's is excellent Italian. you'll also fine TGI Friday', Appleebees and the Olive Garden in the area, if you want a chain. and the McDonald's on 42nd Street has an interesting theme going on.

Our favorite place in NYC is Cosi's at 51st and Broadway. They have great salads, sandwiches and pizza. You can even get smores for dessert at dinner time! Yum!

We stayed at the Marriott Marquis too - down on the first ground level actually outside but a part of the building is a bakery spot that is good to pick up things for breakfast.

We also did John's Pizzeria - that was reasonable enough.

I LOVED Serendipity which isn't really nearby but yummmmmy.

We found the deli's to be ridicuolously high and not worth it in our opinion.

Have fun!
Liz

Thanks so much for your help!! I think I'm leaning towards Johns....I think I remember seeing something on tv about that place!!

For my money, I'd go to Carmine's on 44th Street, right off of Broadway. The portions are served family style and the food is very good. When we've gone with 4 adults, with a bottle of wine, and tip included, we've laid a $100 bill on the table each time. Where else can 4 people eat for $25 each at a sitdown restaurant in NYC?

We plan on eating at John's Pizzeria when we visit New York in a few days.

I don't mean to highjack this tread, but is anyone familiar with a restaurant called the Playwright Tavern? It's located on W. 49th Street, and from the website, it looks like a good place to eat. We'd like to try it, but we aren't interested in anything too fancy.

I second this! The pizza is so good! DH and I just got back from NYC and we ate there on our first and last nights in the city. The atmosphere is really something.

Also, Roxy's deli in times square, just a few steps from the Marquis.

Is this the same Cosi's that is a chain? We have those in Chicago too - and yes they are good, but I would go for something more local.
