I need help. DH came up with the bright idea to go to New York May 20 - 24 during his vacation. So I don't have much time to plan.

There are 4 of us. Me, DH, DD(15), DD(4). Our budget is $150-$180 per night. We will be driving there but don't plan to drive into the city but plan to leave the car at the hotel. Hoping to take some sort of transit and play in the city for the day. So would staying on Staten Island be too far. Or would Jersey be a good choice.

What are the best places/areas to stay that are still convenient to get into the city but are still within budget? Thanks so much for your help :)

I really like staying at the Embassy Suites in Secaucus. There is a bus into the city right outside the hotel. I think there is also a hyatt place and a couple of others but that is where I normally stay. Parking is free as the great breakfast. I always grab a couple of muffins and some fruit from breakfast before heading into the city that way I have snacks and dont have to pay city prices.

It looks like the Embassy is sold out on your dates, but the Hyatt Place which is around the corner is like 160+t during that period. Good luck!

I would check travelzoo.com We regularly get hotels in nyc--times square area for the price you are budgetting. Then you can walk everywhere or take the subway.

We haven't stayed outside NYC yet but I have read posts about other people staying in Jersey City. I booked a Courtyard(?) by Marriott once that was directly across from a train line in to NYC and it was very reasonable but then we changed our minds about that trip. Someone at my office has a DD who lives in Jersey City near mass transit and she said that it was very easy to get from her DD's apartment right in to NYC.

I'd look in Jersey City....I had a friend recently stay there on the water accross from NYC for under $100 a night. I'll try to get the name for you. It is so easy to get to the city from there.

There are 3 hotels in Lyndhurst,NJ and several different buses to NYC stop on the corner where they meet. It's a 15 minute trip without traffic-the traffic is generally where the last 5 minutes would be. Medieval Times is also right there and Lyndhurst is a safe residential town.

I live in NJ, 1 mile outside of NYC actually (by the GWB, George Washington Bridge).

There are a few hotels in the area that I would recommend looking into:

From these you would take NJ public transport (bus system) over the GWB and arrive at the 178th Street subway station in NYC:
Marriott at Glenpointe - Teaneck, NJ
Hilton Garden Inn - Ridgefield Park, NJ

From this, you would take a Ferry across the river and be in Midtown:
Sheraton Lincoln Harbor Hotel - Weehawken, NJ

From this, you would take NJ public transport through the Lincoln Tunnel and end up at the 42nd Street subway station:
Extended Stay Hotel - Edgewater, NJ

I don't know about the Jersey City hotels as I live 20 min north and usually use the GWB or the Lincoln Tunnel to get into the city, although I know that Jersey City has a Path Train that is really convenient.

Hope this helps more than confuses. Enjoy your trip!
