New York (or nearby) beach hotels

I'm trying to plan a week long vacation in New York for my husband's large family. We're hoping to spend a few days in NYC, and then a few days relaxing somewhere. Does anyone have recommendations for budget/family friendly hotels or resorts near a beach or other relaxing location. I'm looking for something within a few hours drive of the city.

I'm loving all the ideas for New York City sightseeing that I'm finding on recent thread too!

edit- I just noticed that you want relaxing beach....there is Spring Lake, NJ. No boardwalk quiet area.

We go to Point Pleasant, NJ beach - I don't have a recommendation for a hotel though but that shore town is very family friendly. There is a boardwalk with rides. I think it's exit 98 off the Garden State Parkway. But if you want rides for teens/adults then Seaside Park is not to far from Point Pleasant.

NO NO NO... You must come to Long Island.
Westhampton is wonderful as well as southhampton, montauk, amagansett.

Not just because I'am from Long Island. But we do have the BEST beaches and I've traveled.

Do you want to be on the beach ??

born and raised on LI- but I have to say she might waste her whole weekend sitting in traffic trying to get out to the East during the summer. While I agree that the beaches are probably nicer- the jersey shore ones are actually closer and easier to get back and forth from imho.
Long Beach Island is the family friendly area with tons of houses for rent. Nice, relaxing and about 2 hours from nyc. And a whole lot cheaper than the Hamptons. Which with no traffic should be 2 hours away but in the summer it can be as much as 5 hoursI've been in it!! So while I LOVE the long island beaches the hassle of getting to them outweighs the beauty imho.

Well, if you go to the NJ shore, be on the road no later than 9am, or else the parkway turns into a parking lot also.

Lavalette NJ...10 minutes to Seaside and 15 minutes to Point Pleasant. I actually have a place in Seaside Pk (also nice, look into staying there too) but growing up we had place in Lavalette. It's family friendly without the boardwalk being right in your face all the time.

Don't let all the talk of shore traffic scare you. I head down every Friday night or Saturday morning...just get on the road early and you can be there in a little over an hour! Enjoy our beautiful beaches!
