My dd natalie will be 18 in april, and wants to go to New York for her birthday. We have quite a lot of VA airmiles to play with so flights shouldnt be a problem - fingers crossed. we have stayed in New York once before but only for 1 night though- we stayed at the Hotel Pennsylvania which is right opposite madison square gardens.
anyway, getting back to it- can anyone recommend the best websites to find good cheap rate hotels please! or recommend hotels there that you have stayed in yourself!
Thanks!!
Jeanette

We stayed in the Novotel with a view of Times Square from the room the last time and this Oct we are staying at the Hilton Gardens Inn Times Square.
The Novotel was very nice and only a couple of blocks from Times Square.

Depends on your budget and what style of hotel you want (i.e. big chain or smaller boutique hotel). Hilton on Avenue of Americas is good - the rates can be very low for New York, and it's in an excellent location near all the major tourist areas. You're just minutes from Central Park, Fifth Avenue and Times Square. If you book directly then you'll get HHonors points and VA flying club miles, too. I'd start with a visit to trip advisor for reviews, and then you can use the hotel's own websites to check prices, before checking with brokers such as Expedia, Hotels.com, LastMinute etc. One company we used to use for Las Vegas hotels was CityAndShow.Com - they often had some pretty good room-only rates and you also only had to pay a deposit. Worth a look.

Have fun planning!

and this Oct we are staying at the Hilton Gardens Inn Times Square.

We stayed there at Easter. :thumbsup2 It's just off Times Square and very nice. I'd definately recommend it. It's very reasonably priced for New York too. We booked direct through their website on one of the reduced price deals they do. The only 'catch' is that the offers are none refundable if you cancel :)

I just LURVE New York.:cool1: :cheer2:

Going back for third time this Thanksgving - paid £1000 for 2 of us for 5 nights through Opodo. (American airlines - not our first choice but DH didnt want to fly from Heathrow or use BA therefore picked AA from Stansted - however 4 weeks later they transferred all their operations to Heathrow!!!! really not happy about this but hey we're going so who cares! ITs only a short flight!!)

Last time we had 6 nights at 3030 (Thirty Thirty) hotel - as the name suggests its on 30th Ave! - just off PArk Ave. PArk Ave leads up to Grand Central Station.
10 mins walk to just about everywhere central - small rooms but lovely and clean and you are out all day anyway.

This year we are staying at the Pan American hotel in Queens. A work colleague went last year just before Xmas and rebooked for this year and is taking his 2 kids with him.
We have also just booked f&m-i-l there for 5 nights at the end of sept this year (surprise 60th for m-i-l).
Its may not be the most central of places but they will pick you up from JFK for free (small fee for return trip), it is only 20mins on underground to central Manhatten and it gives chance to experience "real" NYC.

I trust my colleagues judgement implicitely - and the hotel gets fab reviews of trip advisor.

Ohh sounds fantastic.
I'd love to go for my 30th a big shopping spree beckons.
Hope your soon booked and planning.
MIL and FIL are flying to New York on Saturday,so will let you know how they got on,they are boarding a canadian cruise.:goodvibes

We stayed in the Renaissance Hotel right on Times Square and loved it, great location, fantastic rooms....I did worry about the noise but you couldn't really hear anything except for the occasional siren but you hear that everywhere in NYC! Here's a link for the hotel: http://www.marriott.com/hotels/travel/nycrt-renaissance-new-york-hotel-times-square/ (we booked as a package through Virgin but if I was going again then I would book it seperately.)

Our 2nd trip we stayed at The Plaza overlooking Central Park, it was a surprise trip for our friends birthday and although the hotel is supposedly world class our room was dingy and dirty and I was so upset as it cost sooo much money to stay there never again. However it was lovely waking up one morning and walking out of the entrance to see the freshly fallen snow in Central Park. :cloud9:

When we go next time I want to stay at the 'W' hotel, it looks lovely.....http://www.starwoodhotels.com/whotels/property/overview/index.html?propertyID=97502

Have fun planning Jeanette. :goodvibes

I loved NY. We stayed in the Metropolitan Hotel on Lexington Ave. It was a nice place & cheap we paid £80 each for three nights!! through octopustravel. However the hotel has been refurbished & is now quite expensive.

We stayed at the Algonquin where there used to be lots of famous writers meeting last century. Great hotel and it even included breakfast! Good value then, no idea of prices now.

we stayed at the radio city apt basic but clean
idea for us as there was 5 if booked a hotel would have needed 2 rooms

and last time we stayed in the shearton New york off times square
booked to stay there again this Nov

I am off to NY next April - it's my DDs 16th birthday pressie:) thanks to VA Flying Club (PE flights, too:cool1: ). I transfer my Tesco Clubcards to Airmiles and this pays for hotels:thumbsup2

I have been starting to look around at hotels and have been advised the TimesSquare area is the best to stay in . . . there's just so many hotels to choose from though;) :confused3 :surfweb:

Happy planning - we'll have to compare notes;)

Oh NYNY how lovely :)

Agree the Times Square area is the best for staying in, although in 2003 we enjoyed being near the UN building as the hotel we had was so fab

I stayed at the W this May; good service and lovely modern look to it- we had a fantastic view. A delay in housekeeping and a call about it resulted in an apology and a bottle of champagne. A wonderful deli/store right next door that one of the great doormen recommended to me; I could not stay away! Right across the street is a drop off point for the double decker redline bus tour. I really enjoyed myself and sat next to the tourguide who answered all my questions (she was an actress who has been on tv show Law and Order five times).
I attended several plays and one of the theaters was across the street! All the theaters were in walking distance so we never took a cab to any of them.
Price-wise I have no idea. The whole trip was a gift from a dear friend of mine (a group of us turned 50 this year and celebrated royally!).
