New York New York, Disers I need your help :)

Hi guys! I'm asking you for some advice and information, my mom (50) and her niece (40) are going to New York to celebrate my mom her 50's and my cousin her 40's. So any information you can share with me it's valuable. Anything they can do? Some things you don't have to miss out?? What to do? any tips? Any type of information or advice is valuable.
They are staying at Park south hotel at Manhattan in September, any thoughts on climate for that time or anyone knows the hotel??

I would suggest seeing a play on Broadway, the Museum of Natural History, Museum of Modern Art, Ellis Island & the Statue of Liberty. Don't forget all of the wonderful resturants here in NY! How about Tavern on the Green? Check out the Sightseeing Tour! Madame Tussard's Wax Museum? St. Patrick's Cathedral? Rockefeller Center! Enjoy!

If they've never been before I suggest checking out Times Square for sure. Try to go to the top of the Empire state building. And I don't know the name of it but they have those buses that you can take all around NYC and you can get off and on whenever you want. I went to see Mamma Mia in Jan and it was excellent but my all time favorite play there is Jersey Boys. I highly recommend it!

I'd second their going to a broadway show (Lion King is supposed to be incredible) and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The weather will be cool because it will be the fall time. Light jackets, jeans, and shirts will be needed.

You can buy tickets at Ticketmaster.com or Telecharge.com depending on the show, in advance, or at the theatre's box office when you get here, or at the TKTS booths in Times Square and/or South Street Seaport.

Also, you can go to Broadway Box to get discount codes for shows on and off-Broadway. Those will direct you to Ticketmaster or Telecharge and give you the code for some nice discounts.

How far in advance you book is TOTALLY dependent on what show you want to see.

I second the Lion King, but if your feeling non-Disney Rock Of Ages is a good musical. If they are into photography, the international center of photgraphy is something to look into. Of course hit all the classics of Rockefeller center, St. Pats Cathedral and times square.

What a fun trip! NYC is an amazing city and a great one to celebrate something special. I am sure they will have a wonderful time!

In my opinion (native NYer), September is the BEST time of year weather-wise. We usually have days that are warm but not hot or humid, blue skies, lots of sun. Perfect for walking around and siteseeing.

I have known a few people who have stayed at the Park South and they all really enjoyed it! Very nice and convenient location. I think I remember one person mentioning there was no coffee maker in the room...but plenty of Starbucks, etc. just outside.

Many good ideas have already been shared -- my advice would be for them to try to narrow down the major museums and pick a few that seem really interesting...they are huge, and it can be overwhelming to try to hit them all. I also enjoy some of the smaller museums, such as the Lower East Side Tenement Museum, the Jewish Museum, and the Rubin Museum of Art. Also, September is a great time of year for a botanical garden -- NYC has two beautiful ones, New York Botanical Garden (in the Bronx) and Brooklyn Botanical Garden. They will also be very near Central Park and I hope they have some time to wander and explore here.

I also like to recommend that people take a roundtrip ride on the Staten Island Ferry. This is completely free, and you get a great view of the Statue of Liberty.

There are a lot of great shows on Broadway in the next few months. Unless they have their hearts set on something specific, I would recommend that they buy tickets at the TKTS Booth in Times Square when they arrive. You can find some good deals for most of the tops shows. Broadway ticket prices can be pretty outrageous otherwise!

Hope they have a fabulous trip! (And bring you back plenty of souvenirs)

PS -- I am taking my mother to Italy in a few months to celebrate a big milestone birthday! Hooray for celebrating our moms, right??

If they are open to several shows, I would suggest the TKTS box office the day of the show. YOu can see some great shows CHEAP! I was able to get 5th row for Chicago in June for $35 each. The only downside is you buy them the morning of and it is basically the seats that have not sold for that night's performance. We were there for 5 days and I went each morning to see what was available.

I also loved the Grey Line tour bus. You can get packages that include admission to the Empire State Building and the Statue of Liberty as well as many museums. I completely filled 5 days on the pass I bought and used the Grey Line tour bus to get around during the day--very easy!

If they are going to do Broadway, they should highly consider Wicked...the best show I have ever seen (I saw Lion King and enjoyed Wicked more!!).

Some other suggestions: Outer borough stuff - Brooklyn Botanical Gardens, Coney Island - nothing like a Nathan's famous,it may be hard to get tickets for a Yankees or Mets game but both teams have minor league divisions (Staten Island Yankees and the Coney Island Cyclones), Bronx Zoo...

They are going to have a great time!!

Definetly check out Times Square, lots of things to do and see there.
Central Park is always beautiful, esp in Sept.

September is a GREAT month to go. The weather will most likely be beautiful...which reminds me. At Ground Zero there is a museum all about 9/11. I haven't been to it yet, but I heard it's a great museum, but of course very heartbreaking.

See a broadway show!
Lion King was amazing!!...and obviously you're into Disney so you would like it!

Rock of Ages....All I can say is WOW. Great, great play. Kinda dirty though, so be prepared!!

Have a wonderful time my dd16 and I go every year -catch a show , people watch , shop
some don'ts Jeckyll and Hyde restaurant really really bad Can't stress how bad the food was and expensive ( well NYC is anyway)
Bubba Gumps in Times Square was good for lunch get there early or be prepared to wait for awhile

Wear good walking shoes they are a must
Taxi's - well a little scarey but we did it at night just the two of us. No problem

There is a discount shopping area near Battery Park ( Statue of Liberty) did not get there but heard others talking about it.
Beware of the street vendors you don't get a Prada or D&G for $40 they are fake, but if you don't care then bargin them down

Enjoy! oh don't forget the World of Disney Store !!

As another native NY'er I agree with PP...so much to see and do...pinpoint your interests and pick accordingly. Art Lovers, must sees include the Met, MOMA and the Guggenheim....History Lovers, check out the Museum of Natural History, etc...Shopping lovers, don't miss a walk down Madison Avenue with all it's chi-chi boutiques. I also completely agree about the SI Ferry - best kept secret in the world! The lines/waits to the Statue of Liberty can be huge and I believe it's fairly pricey. You also get the best view of Lady Liberty and the harbor for the cost of a ferry ride. For up to minute info on what's happening in NYC during your stay, be sure to pick up a copy of Time Out NY. Or check out their website at http://newyork.timeout.com/

One more note about the weather...September can still be very warm here! It could easily still be summer like. We don't close our pool until early October and our kids always head back to school in summer gear. Have a great time!!

I just got back from a great week in NYC...stayed close to Times Square...saw Letterman which was great if you are a fan. Also saw Mary Poppins and I highly recommend it...( I also recommend that you dont forget to go to the theater on the correct date, but thats another story) I have seen Lion King 3 times and it is amazing....I have been to NYC probably 4 -5 times so drop me a line if you have any questions...more than willing to help...

Check www.broadwaybox.com for discounts - this site does not actually sell tickets. You get sent through to the ticket agents that usually do, like telecharge or Ticketmaster. There are some pretty good discounts.

Also... go to the Stage Deli... it's on 7th Ave. between 54th and about there... it's on the left side going north... 1 sandwich can feed 2 people... have the rootbeer.

Also go to St. Patricks Cathedral... and when you get to the alter, check out the Cardinals chair. We are the only family in like the last 50 years to reupholster it. Rumor has it that there is a packet inside that has all of our family info on it... and yes... the Pope has sat on our cushions...

If you do go to see Mary Poppins... do NOT sit too far back in the orchestra. You will miss alot of the special effects and also part of the musical because of the way the theater is and the massive set on the stage. It is great though...
