I am taking DD and her friend to New York for her Sweet 16. Where to stay? What to do? We will be there for 3 days one being a weekday. Please try and stay budget friendly if not that is ok!

If you want to see a play check out TKTS for tickets, cheaper
Spend a day taking the subway/busses and just exploring, central park is gorgeous, times square, fao schwartz, tons of shops
Check out restaurant.com for cheap meals, use SUN for 80% off, making some of them $2.00

16 yr old girls will love exploring Greenwich Village and Chinatown, there are tons of funky shops with inexpensive (and expensive) shopping and cool sights to see. A ride on the Staten Island Ferry is free and offers a great view of the Statue of Liberty but may be a bit too cold depending on the January weather.

Times Square is very touristy and fun to do, you can see the Today show in the morning, ice skating in Rockefeller Center is a fun and memorable thing to do as well. Skating at Wollman Rink in Central park is fun as well and much cheaper than Rock Center.

Ice Cream at Serendipity 3 is also a fun activity, Alice's Tea Shop is also a cool eating experience.

We celebrated my DD's sweet 16 in NYC. She was able to bring one friend. We took the train to NYC and the Mega Bus home. Now we did stay at the Waldorf Astoria which is not budget friendly and used a car service for some of our outings.

For her birthday we:

Had her pick a restaurant that she wanted to eat at.
Bought tickets to see a NYC play.
Bought tickets to see the Nutcracker at Lincoln Center.
Did 5th. Avenue and shopping.
Spent a full day in Times Square.
I wrote letters ahead of time and we were in the audience for the Regis and Kelly show and also the Conan O'Brien show. (this was a great idea and free).
We did Rockefeller Center, the lights, the tree, and ice skating.
Visited China Town and Little Italy.

We ate at Otto (Mario Batali's restaurant), Ellen's Stardust diner, Carmines, Rosa Mexicano, Oscar's Brasserie, and tons of little deli's and hot dog/hot chocolates from food carts.

I will not lie, it was not a cheap birthday present, but she has told me time and time again that she would never change her mind, it was her favorite birthday/vacation/time with friend and Mom she has ever had. It was the best bonding we have ever had (even with her best friend and my best friend being there). She said she felt like a Princess the whole trip and could never thank me enough.

Now here's some suggestions:

See if any of your friends have hotel points or perks they can offer to you for the hotel room to defer the cost there.

Use www.broadwaybox.com for tickets to the show. The ticket booths have a lot of restricted view ones and seriously we found a better price checking and checking through the above link.

If you are in a city that has mega-bus, book the second your dates open up. You can get $9.00 fares one way if lucky, I got mine at $21.00 per person, still very economical.

Pick out restaurants that will be more classy than she is used to, but still in the clique zone. Any of the food network restaurants will fit, and let them get dressed up and feel like little socialites. It is really fun!!

If she gets gifts from family ask for gift cards to stores like H&M, or stores you do not have in your area. This way she will be able to shop and get the great after Christmas deals.

Check out the Arts in NYC - the Museums, Lincoln Center, etc. These are great ways to show her something she may otherwise not be able to do until she is out of college.

Let her splurge and heckle for a price in Chinatown. Yes it' a knockoff, but the experience is really fun. This can be a wallet, jewelry or even perfume.

Last but not least, go to Central Park. Dress warm. They have little stands on some of the weekends during the winter even though it is cold. She got her favorite hat at one of the stands, and loves it even to this day.

Last but not least, even though it's cold if you do not have a Pinkberry in your city, GO!!

Hope this helps.

Now, IT was cold, slushy and we changed clothes a lot (her birthday is December, so you will be in the same boat).

:goodvibes ... It is VERY COLD here in NYC in Jan but the suggestions above sound just about right . TKTS is great I suggest a great girls play is Momma Mia the music is good and the kids will like it , Mary Poppins is good as well as the Lion King I do love the old stand by of Phantom !! I am sure all these shows have TKTS tickets . :thumbsup2

What time in Jan are you visiting ? The tree and decorations maybe down by the time you come .

Funny my Daughter turned sweet 16 in April and we are off to WDW with my sister and her two friends for a 6 day trip from NYC ! I did a trip to Universal with my oldest ... It is worth every dime as they remember it forever and my DD 19 still talks about her trip I cant wait to go to WDW with my middle one now !!

13 Elizabeth Street....looks like an office building, but when you go in and go down the escalators, there are some cool shops with Japanese Disney items.

We love the Stardust Diner, it is a really fun experience and we also really enjoyed Juniors in TS. The food is good and great cheesecake.

Also Dylan's Candy Bar, it is a huge candy store owned by Ralph Lauren's daughter. It is a really fun experience and so is the M&M Store.

Anything in Lincoln Center is an experience.

If there is a show with a big name star I would go there. I know that right now Daniel Ratcliff is in How to Succeed in Business but I don't know if he will still be there in January.

My daughter loved the GIANT Forever 21 store in Time Square.

In Central Park there is an Alice in Wonderland statue (among many others) that my daughter really enjoyed.

Hope you have a great time. That is a wonderful 16th birthday gift.

My DH offered something similar for my DDs 15th but NO! she wants to do the whole party thing - I guess it's because we go into NYC so much (we live in Somerset County, NJ so it takes us about an hour 10 minutes to drive into Midtown).

I always recommend the Radio City Apts to stay since they are pretty reasonably priced and have a little kitchenette. They are on 48th. My DD and I have stayed in them whenever she takes dance workshops that are a couple of days long.

Some of the things that have been suggested previously are great ideas.

We haven't walked around Chinatown but we have walked all around Wall Street area and my DD loves going into Century 21 (she takes after her Mom :lmao:)

Also, you can do Tea at The Plaza. It's pretty expensive but it's a great Mom & Daughter bonding time. A friend of mine did breakfast at Tiffany's early one Sunday morning with her daughter - she got croissants & hot chocolate and acted like they were Audrey Hepburn - it was really cute idea since they both "dressed" like her.

In January, some of the shows have discounted tickets. I get notices and I'll make a note to PM you when I get the ones for January. Right now I just got one for $75 tickets to Billy Elliott but its only for certain days in September.

Have a great time planning.

When in January is your DDs birthday? Mine is on the 15th, so we luck out and have a 3-day weekend

NYC in January and being outside is just too painful for me. I dislike cold weather. We went in Dec last year and I thought I was used to cold weather, but NY was unbelieveably colder than Ohio! We thought we would freeze to death waiting on the ferry and almost gave it up!

My DD birthday is January 5th. Thank you guys so much for the ideas. I know it will be freezing in January but we are from Atlanta so the fact that she will be able to see snow will make her day. I am dreading the cold weather but she has always wanted to go to NY to go shopping.
