New York hotel help please!

DH & I are thinking of going to NY in November to see the Christmas sights, and I was looking at hotels on line, and I hate them! They're all so cold & upscale looking, we'd hate it! If I'm going to pay $300 a night I want to enjoy it, not be uncomfortable!

Any recommendations for a hotel near Rockefeller Center that's "normal" and not high-brow?

BTW, I looked up the Plaza just for kicks since that's where Kevin stayed in Home Alone 2. HOLY COW but that's out of our price range!

We've stayed at the Marriott Marquis and Le Parker Meridien. I won't stay at Le Parker Meridien again. It was VERY modern and cold to me. Just not my cup of tea. I thought the Marriott Marquis had very nice rooms, cozy and comfortable. We may end up using some DVC points to stay in NY and that would be at the Loews Regency Hotel. I've seen pictures and it looks nice. I also know someone that stayed there and they said it was fantastic.

Mariott Marquis is just a normal hotel. not high brow by any stretch of the imagination and a great location.

BUT I love the Pennisula Hotel and the Sofitel.

We stayed at the Crowne Plaza in a "king corner" room -- it was just DH and I, celebrating our 25th wedding anniversary -- and what I loved about this room is that two of the walls were entirely windows and you had a fabulous view of the city. We travel all the time, so I'm comfortable at just about any hotel from the Grand Floridian to a Motel 6 (LOL!), but I found the staff here to be very friendly and willing to answer questions, etc. I would stay here again. Now, this is New York City, Times Square, so I think that most hotels in the area are going to be pretty pricey. So if you can't find one you like more, get a "king corner" room here because of the amazing views.

I totally love The Marquis. We stay there every year just before Christmas because of the location, location, location I know it's isn't exactly cheap but right now you can get a pretty good deal, and besides, it's my DH's gift to me every year. Nothing else I want.

As an aside, be careful when looking for a place in NYC. They don't really have mid range hotels. You can either choose nice & sophisticated (clean) place or suspicious 'by the hour' type places. It's my experience that most big cities are like this. Price is a consideration but there is a big difference between a 'budget' hotel in the suburbs and a 'budget' place in a city. I always err on the side of a doorman with 24 hour staff catering to big-wigs from all over the world.

The Washington Post recently reviewed the Distrikt Hotel. It is near Times Square. It got a great rating and was somewhat affordable ($259 per night for 2 queen beds). The Post felt the room price would go up soon. They have a website. I think it's www.distrikthotel.com but not sure on the spelling. Check it out.

Someone on here suggested to me 2 years ago NY Palace. My dd and I had a room overlooking St Patrick's Catherdral and we could see Rockerfeller Center and walk to it. Of course my dd loved the Hallmark on the corner to buy stuffed animals. They slipped her a few extra in her bag.....LOL. I adored that hotel and if I go back will stay again. I got a good deal. I think breakfast included for less than $300/night. The staff was so attentive. By the second day they knew mine and dd's name and the waiters would slip us into their section for breakfast instead of waiting in line. It was wonderful. Loved, loved, loved it.

They do not light the tree in rock center until december... I am sure some christmas in NY is up in November ... but really not in full swing yet!!

We're staying in NJ for about $85 a night with free parking and breakfast, then will either drive into the city on the weekend or take public transport. I really don't want to spend 2 months of mortgage payments to sleep 4 nights and upwards of $50 per night to park. There are tons of places to park for $10-15 if you get in town before 10 AM.

Well hey, it's old Hollywood art deco. We always stay there. I want to go up to see a concert in TS Oct 1. Need to talk my wife into it.

Have you ever noticed the old lady that hangs out at that hippie store between the hotel and the Mexican restaurant? She is always there.

I loved the Belvedere when we stayed there for my DD's HS graduation trip in 2002. (I can't believe it's been 8 years )

It had recently been refurbished, and the room was very nice. And I loved that it had a small refrigerator and microwave for drinks and leftovers. If I go back to NYC I would definitely stay there again.

Such a convenient location, an easy walk to many popular sites.
