New York Hotel for October

Just popped across from the UK boards to ask a question which I hope some of you can help me with!

DH & I are taking DS to New York for his 18th birthday in October. We will be there for 5 nights (Sun - Thurs). I am now realising how expensive the hotels are.

My question is:
Should we book our hotel now - or are we likely to find cheaper deals if we wait until nearer our travel date?

If anyone can recommend any good (but not too expensive!) hotels, that would be really appreciated! And any recommendations for booking agents/sites?

I would book my hotel now, and check for deals periodically. It doesn't cost anything to make a reservation. At least you'll know you have a place to stay. I usually have 3-4 reservations going at the same time. The trick is to remember to cancel them 24 -72 hours prior to departure (Or what ever that hotel's cancellation policy is)

I agree book now.. if you find a better deal later on reserve & cancel the old one... October thru the holidays seems to be a very expensive time of year to visit NYC.. The same hotel I paid $229 for over July 4th was over $400 in October!!
