Looking at taking the Dream to Bermuda this fall. We are from the Midwest and have never been to New York. We fly out of either St. Louis or Memphis and ONLY on Southwest bc we currently have companion passes. What is my best choice of airport to fly into in the New York region? Thanks!

Any of them are going to be a taxi ride/uber from the airport. Are you flying in the day before or the day of? If the day before, where are you staying that night. LaGuardia is probably cheapest to get to Manhattan, then JFK, with Newark the most expensive. But, it looks like Southwest only serves LaGuardia.

Editing to add that looks like you needed more info than that. Those 3 airports are the only major airports that serve NYC. There are others that are several hours away, but the transportation from them to the city is going to more than eat up any possible savings.

Perfect! Thank you both! I was looking at LaGuardia, will likely come in a couple days before and do some sight-seeing! Thanks! Bonus:It’s part of the Southwest sale today!

We are on this cruise! October 31 - November 4 for my birthday! We are flying from Minnesota on Delta the day before. We haven’t chosen a hotel yet - that’s where we are stuck. Not sure how we’re getting to the port yet either as it looks as if there is no Disney sanctioned transfers or hotels for this itinerary.

Excited for this bday trip - no kids!

When I asked my TA about transportation in NYC, he said that Disney would do it and charge some fee, but that they couldn't give me an exact price until closer to departure. I suspect that they basically just call you a cab. You can ask the hotel to do that if you aren't comfortable hailing a taxi yourself, or if you need a larger car/van.

For anyone able and willing to use public transportation, you can take a train directly from EWR to Penn Station, which isn't too far from the port and has a taxi queue. The other airports require multiple trains. Of course, getting a taxi is much simpler, but also potentially pricier.

We’ve got some time before we sail and we aren’t even sure which hotel we’ll be staying in yet. Not sure if there are places closer to the port or if just staying somewhere near JFK is the best bet. Def have some research to do! We’ve only sailed out of PC, San Diego, and Miami and those have been relatively easy.

There's a fun hotel right at JFK: https://www.twahotel.com/

Last time I looked, Disney does offer transportation from JFK. So, that might be the easiest option, though you won't get to enjoy the city at all.

The closest hotel to the port is Ink48, which is just one block away. It's a bit removed from most of the touristy stuff, though, and the nearest subway station is at 50th and 8th, which is a bit of a walk (about 10 minutes). If you're flying in just for the cruise and won't have time for sightseeing anyway, then Ink48 is a good option. Otherwise, it might be easier to stay somewhere else and take a taxi to the port in the morning.

Just an FYI, JFK (and LGA) are both in Queens, whereas the port is on the West Side of Manhattan. If you're interested in doing site seeing before your cruise, you will likely want to base yourself in Manhattan, Midtown West. From JFK there is the AirTran, which connects to the Long Island Rail Road into penn Station on 33rd and 8th. Manageable with luggage. For LGA I'd definitely take an Uber or a cab. There are a number of hotels around 8th/9th Avenue that are decent - think Hampton Inns and the like - but just be aware that all of them will require a bit of a walk to the port as it's located across the West Side Highway past 12th Avenue.

Excellent info! But just for a good laugh, I’m from a town that didn’t get a stop light until I was almost in high school and even now the town I live in only has 3. I’ve never been in a taxi or on the subway, so flying in and only going to the cruise port is sounding pretty good 🤣🤪🤣

If you're coming from the airport, you can just line up for a taxi. At a hotel, you can ask them to call you a cab. You probably won't have to worry about getting a taxi on your own unless you use one to go sightseeing.

I still want to find an excuse to stay at the TWA at JFK just for the fun theming. It's silly to fly to NYC from here, so I have to figure out a reason to fly from JFK instead.

So much cheaper to stay at the airport!!!!!! THANK YOU!! We are booked the night before and they offer day rooms - our flight doesn’t leave until late afternoon - so its perfect. Spending less than the Marriott Marquis (Disney’s preferred hotel) and when I spoke to the DCL agent today - they can assist with quotes for transfers - but they don’t have Disney transfers like they do for PC or Miami.

Great recommendation-thanks again!

So if you want to do a bit of sight seeing or take in a broadway show should you stay in manhattan/midtown?
Then next day take cab to port? I had no idea the cruise terminal is already in Manhattan? Thx

We were going to stay near airport also but now thinking of just staying in town since port is around there
anyway.

Yeah. Unfortunately, the port isn't very convenient. It's in Manhattan, on the west side of midtown, but there isn't a subway stop nearby, so you need to walk (about 10 minutes) or take a cab. If you want to see anything else in the city, then you probably want to stay somewhere near a subway station in midtown. That can get pricy, though!

As a New Yorker who can literally see the cruise ships from my office window (always so jealous when I see the Disney ships!), I’d advise a cab from LGA and a hotel near Broadway, 7th Ave, or 8th Ave in the 50s. Close to Times Square, Broadway, and Central Park. Not the cheapest, but a great way to see NYC and very close to the cruise terminal.

This is the correct answer.

Well, "very close" for a taxi. It's 10-15 minutes walking from the 50th St. station, a bit more from most hotels. That's what we did last time and the walk was OK. Not much to see, but not a dangerous area, either. It's a bit bumpy for rollers.

Thoughts on hotel / pre-cruise sightseeing:

I do not want a long commute to start my cruise embarkation day - especially so in a crowded city. So, I would get to the city and stay somewhat near Central Park & the Park or near Times Square if going to a show. On a weekend trip, we stayed at the Hampton Inn Hell’s Kitchen. We walked, took the subway a few times and did the HOHO bus. Very convenient to Broadway and Times Square. (We were a 50+ and a 19 yo females).

Decide what is your priority attraction / activity for a limited time stay. Some things do require tickets (Empire State Building).

A Hop-on Hop-off bus can get you a nice overview with the option to use it for transportation (I’ve been on these in some cities where you may have to wait if the bus is full.)

I've grown fond of the midtown hilton on 6th avenue and 53rd for this purpose. It's not in an overwhelming tourist area but still close enough to everything, but I'm usually coming in from Grand Central Terminal. Anything closer to Times Square and money starts flying out the window.

Same for me, that’s where I’ll be staying.
