Although I am from NY originally and I know lots of things to see and do in NYC, I have no experience staying over. I have a friend who wants to go with her DH and DD (9) for Thanksgiving and she is wants to know if there is any deals out there or places she should look for accomodations. She doesn't even know where to start so any thoughts or comments would be appreciated.

The two times that we went, I had gotten our hotels on Priceline.com (The Hilton $80 and The Mariott Marquis $110), but I don't know if priceline would have any rooms over Thanksgiving Weekend since that is probably the busiest time in NYC.
I don't think there will be any good deals at that time, but who knows?
Good luck to your friend.

Are they AAA members? I just flipped through their latest magazine they sent. I don't see anything for Thanksgiving, but they are doing a special for a week in December from here up there. If they're members, it might be worth it to call their office and check.

Where were the hotels located and did you like one better than the other?

I am of the mindset that they won't find any terrific deals, but I would like to point them in the direction of something decent.

Thanks.

My son got a fairly good price on the Mariott Marquis and really enjoyed his stay. He was not happy with his room--view-- initially and expressed that to front desk. They changed his room. The hotel is right in Times Square.

My favorite was the Mariott Marquis because the location was just PERFECT. Right in the heart of it all on Broadway in Times Square. All of the theatres were right around us..... in fact, there is a Broadway Theatre right IN the hotel (The Marquis Theatre) which is currently showing "Thoroughly Modern Millie"
.
If I remember correctly, the first hotel we stayed at The Hilton was on 5th Ave. (Avenue of The Americas).

I'll be following this thread closely, too..We are going in December (hopefully) and I know NOTHING about NYC. The friends we are going with have booked the Flatotel (?) near Rockefeller Center. It looks nice, but I'm not sure..

All you city girls help us out!

Booked a room for next week via Priceline. All 4* were running $300/night on hotel websites, expedia, travelocity, hotels.com, etc. Got Marriott in Times Square for $150. It wasn't accepted until about 2 weeks ago. I don't know if you'd be successful around Thanksgiving though. I've also stayed at the Hilton on the Ave of the Americas (not Times Square). Also a good location.

If your friend is considering bidding for a hotel on Priceline, I recommend she visit this site:
biddingfortravel.com

The site was created to inform people on the best bidding "strategies" to use in order to try to get the best deal possible. There are ways to get "free" re-bids if your first offer is not accepted. They also have a hotel star level guide as well as a hotel review section.
