Here is a post I made on Tripadvisor about our day in NYC. The NYpass
can be a good deal if you really plan your day.

Back in June I posted our experience with the pass. We decided to do it again yesterday for my older son's b-day.
Took the LIRR into Penn Station. Arrived 9:20am.
Walked to Planet Hollywood to pick up pass.
Walked to NBC studio tours. There were only 2 tours left by 10am...so get there early if you want one. We got tix for the 2:45pm tour.
Took a cab to the CSI experience. Very cute, but of course overpriced so glad it was included. There are 3 different "crimes"...you get 1 with admission. They did not give us a choice, but it seemed like we got a "milder" one because we were with kids. My boys are 10 and 12 and fans of the show, so they probably would have enjoyed a different one more. (we had #3)
Walked over to Madame Tussauds. There was a little bit of a line, but the pass had a separate one so we walked right up. It was crowded in there, but got a few good pics.
Walked over to Johns Pizza and had lunch.
Took a cab to the top of the rock. No lines at all. Went right up.
Went on NBC Studio Tour. That was fun! We saw the set of Dr, Oz, Jimmy Fallon and SNL.
Wanted to take a cab to the BEAST boat ride, but traffic was soooo slow it was faster to walk. It is by the intrepid museum. We got there a few minutes before 5pm and got on the last ride of the season. Sooo much fun! They stop next to the Statue of Liberty for pics.
Walked across the street to Lucky Strike bowling. The boys bowled a game each (10per person per game plus $5 for shoes = 30.00 for 1 game of bowling...ouch!) It was also happy hour so my husband and I enjoyed 2.50 Sam Adams and .25 chicken wings....biggest bargain of the day! We hung out on their couches and watched the Jets game.
We got on the bus to go across town to hit the Empire State Building. Traffic was a mess! We finally gave up and walked!!!!! Much quicker!
My husband took the boys into Heartland Brewery to use the restroom. I listened to the sales pitch given by the guys that sell tix to ESB on the street. Please do not listen to them. They were selling "priority Tix" because of the 2 hour wait! Guess what? There was hardly a line once you went in!!!!! The NY pass doesn't have a separate line here...you wait with everyone else. The line was short and had tickets within 5 minutes. (we took just our youngest son back in June and did ESB first in the morning....much, much more crowded...lines were very, very long!)
We went on the NY experience ride first. Totally outdated.... but the kids loved it and that is what matters. It is kind of embarassing that in such a great city, they would show tourists such an old movie! I would never have done it if it weren't included in the pass.
the line for the elevators was short, but the viewing deck was very crowded. We prefer top of the rock. My older son had never been before so it was a must see for him.
We walked to Penn station and within 5 minutes we were on the 10:25 train home....
I know for many, this pass isn't worth it. For what we did, it was to us. I equate it to purchasing a theme park admission ticket for the day.
Had a great day...
Hope that helps!
As for not going to Times Square, I think a first time tourist should go there and experience it. My kids love going to Times Square (and they love Chinatown too) but when my husband and I go into the city, we avoid Times Square at all costs!!!
I would do separate day trips for a Yankee's game vs. touring the city. That would just be way too much in one day!
