New York Bound

We are going in April too. In the past we have gotten the City Pass which is a really good deal on tickets but it's not a tour. We did all the attractions in two days. We aren't doing it this year only because my son has no interest in several of the attractions. You should really look into the City Pass and see if those are the attractions you are interested in, it saves a decent amount.

Thank you. I will look into that as well.

I have found the newyorkpass to be a great deal if your plans match what is included.

We are going later this month. I bought the 4 attraction NYC Explorer Pass at Costco. Will save a few dollars, and it has all the big attractions. There are some awesome laminated maps at Barnes and Noble that I'm using ahead of time just to help plan, and I figure they'll make great (cheap) souvenirs. (Yeah, it can be done on a smartphone, but I'm a map person.)

Make sure if you want to do Statue of Liberty you book the tickets ahead of time. I'm pretty sure the crown is sold out all of April. Also pre booking the 911 memorial might be smart too we waited about 45 min in March last year.

Thanks Kidsfirsttrip. I saw that the crown is already sold out. I just bought the pedestal ticket now.

I would not actually VISIT the Statue of Liberty
we took a Harbour Tour on a Fast boat-it was cool! You got on tour near the Brooklyn bridge and see all the sites-Including the Statue of liberty! Can take good pics from boat

My DH and I had a great time when we went to NYC and did touristy things. We did one of the hop on hop off bus tours and loved it. They are hit or miss, depending on the guide on the bus you get. We took the Staten Island ferry and got great photos of the Statue of Liberty. Then, we just hopped on the return ferry. It was nice to just relax and enjoy the free ride.

I think we want to visit Statue of Liberty and then hit Ellis Island. I like the history side of things.

I like History too. We went to the MET. Wish we had more time there, could have spent an entire day but only had a couple of hours.

I see you already have SOL tickets so you know that only Statue Cruises can actually dock and let you off on the islands; all the other "SOL tours" are actually just a drive-by. You aren't missing much by not going to the crown. It's a strenuous climb up a narrow, short spiral stairway to get into the crown. DH (distance runner) and DD (dancer) said they wouldn't repeat the experience. I did it in my early 20s- didn't find the view all that amazing, and had to sit for almost a half-hour after until my legs didn't feel like jelly! OH- there is a bag check and security check, and they are pretty serious about this, so heed the directions on the statue cruises webpage.

The pedestal has a very interesting museum inside, all about the Statue, its history, etc., as well as some "life size" example of the size of the Statue's features. Ellis Island is a favorite of ours; it's hard to imagine what those immigrants endured, just to get into our country. Make sure to plan a couple of hours here.

We don't do the city buses for getting around- we use the subway for efficiency and convenience. Traffic is traffic, and on a bus we found ourselves sitting in traffic when we wanted to be exploring. Same thing for the HOHO (hop on/hop off) buses and tours; you spend most of your time sitting in traffic. Having said that, one of our favorite things to do in NYC (well, any city, actually), is to take the Grey Line Night Tour bus (not a HOHO) on our first night in town (weather permitting, of course). We try to leave the Times Square location about 30 minutes before sunset, and sit outside on the top deck of the bus (bring warm clothes, even in summer). It is SO MUCH FUN to be up among the lights of Times Square, listening to the tour guide describe everything. We enjoy the overview of the city, riding by sites we hadn't thought of, and maybe making a change to our itinerary based on something we see. The tour we like best goes over the bridge into Brooklyn; fabulous viewing of Manhattan after dark, all lit up! Traffic isn't as bad at night, as well as not wanting to go exploring as much after dark, so we don't mind the Night Tour bus- it's fun!

Shows- If you don't want to drop mega-bucks to see BOM, just go to TKTS and see what's discounted. Actually, you can check them online (tdf.org) to see what's at the booths today. Might help you decide what to do. We have also been successful at getting rush tickets at the box offices on the morning-of, for several shows. You can check online (try broadwaybox.com) to find out the different theaters' restrictions/cost/time, etc. for rush tickets.

I agree with the other posters. I do prefer the public bus to the subway at times, for viewing neighborhoods (above ground). It's not as convenient, though.
NYC tourist tips:
I know it's not you that made the video so this is nowhere near directed at you. 1)What in the world kind of accent is that whoever that is is talking is nowhere near a New Yorker, nobody sounds like that. Clown 2)The Italian stallion was Rocky and he was from Philadelphia not New York City.

People should at least get their stereotypes straight they go through all the trouble of making Muppets with dialogue

just a question on TKTS, where is this place ? there will be 2 families going to NYC, and one of them might what to go see a show depending on price of tix for the family. do they go to this place in the morning of the show to see if they can get a good price ?

I live in NY. If you plan on doing 9/11 memorial , freedom tower, Statue of Liberty you should consider buying a city pass. It saves some money and there will be no need to wait on lines.

Also consider the sea glass carousel while downtown when doing the 9/11 memorial. Just a short walk south you can also jump on the states island ferry for free take a boat ride there, grab an ice cream and get back on the ferry back to your original spot.... Beautiful views of NYC. Consider getting on just at sunset.

Oh, and stay away from Ellen's star dust diner...

So much better places to dine. If you have any questions let me know.

The tickets booth is right in Times Square or downtown at south street seaport. Be flexible on what you would like to see and you can get great deals.
Matilda and school of Rock are awesome shows. I hate saying this but Aladdin is terrible in my opinion .
