What happens if you book Dec. 30 of 2013 through Jan. 6th of 2014 and then have to cancel. Are the points put back into 2013 or 2014 or what ???

I have 196 BCV points (177 which can be banked to 2013)
I want to get two studios for New Years Eve at the 11 month marker.
If I understand this I will be using 19 pts that were pushed from 2012 to 2013, 177 pts. that are 2013 and I will have to get a few points from 2014 to complete the week.
Now the other couple that "wants" to go are notorious for backing out at the last min. ... what will happen if I have to cancel a month or two out ??? I told the other couple that they would have to commit 100% by my banking deadline which would be Oct. 31 of 2013.

Thank Goodness there are great thinkers on the DisBoards :yay::yay::yay:

if you cancel, the points are returned to your UY, it would be 2013, I'm guessing you have a March UY. If you borrow points from 2014 UY those are a final transaction and remain in the 2013 UY should you cancel. As far as the banked points that go into 2013, they must be used by the end of your UY. Be sure to use banked points first. Remember to follow your UY, not calendar year

So I should make sure to use the 2012 points, the 2014 points and 2013 pts. to make our resevation (we will for sure be going no matter what) and then only use 2013 points to make the other resevation. That way if they cancle by Oct. 31 I can still bank those 2013 point to 2014 thus not loosing anything.
Right ???

Yes you should use the banked points first, they would expire. You mentioned you may need to borrow from 2014, but if you did cancel, those points would remain in 2013 UY. You would use the banked first, then the current UY 2013, and then only borrow if you need. If you cancel, those current UY 2013 can be banked to 2014, by your banking deadline.

Make the reservation for your potentially flakey friends FIRST, using only current 2013 UY points. So if you need to cancel that room, you would be able to bank them later. Then make your own, more certain reservation, using the banked 2012 points, whatever 2013 points are left & any borrowed 2014 points needed.

Bronte - This is what I would do, too. :)

Also, if you can, get your friends to make some non-refundable arrangements, such as airfare before your banking deadline. If your friends have something to lose by cancelling, it will cut way down on the temptation to back out at the last minute (unless there is a legitimate emergency).

Good luck!

Thanks for all the great advice.
I love our friends and I love the idea of vacationing with them but I also know them and know that they have backed out many times before with our group. We are going down no matter what so that we can get in on the DVC Pap speical (we are getting vouchers now to activate Dec. 30th of 2013.)

I will call MS first thing the morning my 11 month window opens. I would think trying to get 2 BCV studios for Dec. 30th will be hard even at 11 months. Would it be better to call at 9 am then try to book via online at 8 because I want to use my points in a very detailed way ??

One more question ... If they do go through with this and we use our points for them DH thinks it is ok to ask them for the cost of a value for the same stay (we are asking them to stay at BCV because we love it and own there but really they could stay anywhere.)

Thanks Again ... The Disboards are the BEST !!!!

If you do it the way I mentioned above, it should be relatively simple to do it online at 8 AM.

NYE is a very coveted time and booking early is highly advisable. You may book online using banked, current, and borrowed points. The advantage is time, doing it 8:00 a.m. vs. waiting for ms. There really is no other difference between booking online than over the phone. The online system is pretty easy and straight forward, allowing you to confirm your decisions as you go along such as borrowing needed points. At the end of the process it does summarize points usage on screen much like ms would do for so you understand how your points were applied for the reservation, and if you are not happy, you have that final time to cancel or confirm that reservation.

I think that with doing it online the system will take the banked points first, then the current UY and then borrow. At least this is what has happened the last two times I made reservations. I didn't see any place I could change it but then I didn't need to have it done differently. I also had points in holding which they took first. I didn't need to borrow but did have banked points and those were used second. if you want to allocate specific points to each reservation you may have to call MS since you want to use all current UY point for the friends reservation. I would also discuss the possibility of payment from them before you make any reservations and see what they say. I think your offer is certainly more than fair but is there a chance they think you are providing a room at no charge? If so find out now and avoid a problem later. Good luck and enjoy the planning.

If I remember, the last time I booked, it definately showed where my points were coming from. I'm 90% sure I could choose which contract/year I wanted the points from, but it might just have been information.

The only problem with booking your friends reservation first is that it will take a bit of time and once you are done, there might be no rooms left for you. If you are only borrowing "a few" points from 2014 I would book your stay first.
