The price of shipping has gone up beyond belief effective October 1. WDW will no longer ship collectibles using ground shipping. And everything is price-based.

For example, the WDCC Dreamfinder and Figment, which is about 8 inches and costs $199 will cost $51 to ship.

Be very careful when ordering anything. It may now be worth it to pay the Sales Tax and take stuff off-site to ship home, and using mail order, especially from Art of Disney, may become prohibitive.

Would this cost increase apply if you group your purchases and ship them home from your resort? This sounds like it only applies if you purchase something from one of the shops and select the "ship" option. Anyone know for sure?

This only has to do with purchases that go through merchandise shipping. Going through the resort it is normally your choice. (But you do have to pay sales tax on everything since you have accepted it in Florida.)

I read about this in another thread...it's so stupid! Disney will *kill* their shipping market, folks will now buy *less* if they must ship items home. They'll just carry the stuff off-site and get it shipped for a reasonable price.
I predict...someday soon there will be a sticky thread on the DIS about off-site shipping locations.
As the saying goes...penny-wise and pound-foolish.

agnes!

Hey CF...just to clarify, collectibles only...things like snowglobes and big figs and ornaments, etc? Does normal shipping rates apply for all other things like shirts and hats and plush? Or if you spend $3000 at WOD store, the shipping costs are based on the total amount spent and not items? (which would be based on what the items were, or the total amount of the purchase)?

I buy way too much stuff to not ship, but it sounds like I would probably be better off sending it back to the resort and just letting WL ship it. It's not that big a deal to get boxes from the Mercantile and I always pack bubble wrap and tape. We did that last time, shipped four big boxes. Those shipping costs were over $200 (but I think my sis had it sent air instead of ground...I'm not picky, ground would be fine for me).

I've always been extremely uncomfortable with packing stuff in my suitcase to bring home...too many what ifs. We never had one item broken from what we shipped, but the Disney stuff had about one a box (and I think there were three of them). I guess Disney was getting tired of replacing broken items shipped ground and jacked up the shipping rates (but a simple solution would have been to pack them better IMHO).

I wonder what it would cost to have them ship a big fig from the store though. Kind of hard to have one of those shipped back to the resort and I don't think they will let me take it on the plane!

I emailed WDW Merchandise asking for them to send me the new shipping rates and here is their reply:

OK, I'm a shipping-virgin. How does it work when the resort ships stuff home for you? You just say - ship it to this address and they box it up and everything? Or do you have to have the box & shipping materials to do it & they just mail it?

Thanks for any info!

Although my experience with shipping has been limited, these are the two options we were given:

1) Take your purchases to the gift shop with receipts and have them ship for you.

2) Get a box from the gift shop, fill it, seal it, take it to the concierge desk and they ship from there.

We didn't do option 1 because I'm a package opener...I couldn't keep it all together with the right bags and receipts if it killed me. Plus, I take shirts out to wear, keep the pins out, etc. Besides that, we had tons of different bags and it would have been too hard to keep up with everything.

I liked option 2 better because I could pick through the stuff and play with it and pack the boxes up much better than Disney could (shirts and plush make great breakable protectors). I liked either having the total control of shipping it myself, or having none by having the stores ship it directly. Once the merchandise made it into my piddies, I want control!

I guess with the new shipping rules, I'll probably have the big figs shipped directly home and everything else I'll do myself. I think I'd probably prefer it better that way anyway...I have a bad habit of buying something, having it shipped directly, then forgetting I bought it and either buying it again, or not buying it because I thought I already did!

All I can say is that it hasn't diminished our amount of shipping at all in the past few weeks..... (I work at a WDW resort)
