Anne: Now I got it! Sorry, that's what happens when you come in on the tail end of a conversation. Suffice it to say, I love JB's plan and being the mortal (nonathelete) that I am, I don't think I would have been able to stick with any other routine.

Duckie: Listen to Anne....she knows what she's talking about! :thumbsup2

Hi Guys!

Super short post as the flu is on a rampage through our house, just wanted to let you know we're still breathing!

MfM gets my highest recommendation, it's a great book!

Everyone plan on a fantastic walking week!

Oh, Maria! You have my sympathies on the house of flu--take care of yourself and get plenty of rest!

Oh, Maria you have my sympathies too!!!!
We had the flu - it was in rotation for two weeks, then we had a few days off, and went right into chest cold...everyone is still not healthy.

I love winter but I am sure tired of this one. :headache:

Thank you, Anne and Jeanne! I am one of those compulsive, go-all-out people who can get myself in over my head, so I wanted to check with all of you on whether I was getting myself in trouble by signing up for a 10 miler at this point (my first race!). I'm only entering to finish, and I'm still waiting to hear what time you have to finish by to be considered an official finisher.

Steff, thanks for the encouragement! :)

it seemed like training and training for the half next january without doing anything in between wasn't going to keep me focused. I'm still hoping I can find a great deal on airfare so I can do the Minnie!

If any of you sickos sneeze on the keyboard and I catch it I'm gonna have to drive up north and fuss at somebody. I haven't had the flu since about 1975 and I don't want it again. I don't usually even catch colds. I've had maybe 3 colds in the last 5 years. Amazingly two of them were at Disney. I guess being over tired from the drive and time change as well as being around so many crowds.

At work I use hand sanitizer after each patient and try to avoid anyone with an obvious cold. When I finish working with a child with a runny nose I give my work station an aolcohol bath.

I was amazed at the thread about who's turning 40, people who exercise age slower than people who don't, I was surprised at who were in their 40s. I would have guessed DianeL to be no more than mid 30s as well as many others I was surprised at.

There is a good bunch of us on here that are in our 50s and have many many good years of fun left to us. A person in good condition can expect to live well into their 80s and even beyond. It's certainly worth the effort. I would love to sit at the Big River and share a cold pitcher of beer with my walking buds and brag about how hot we still look in our 90s.

Good Morning everyone, have a super Monday.

Happy Panda:hippie:

90's? Is that all you are going for Ageless Panda??? I plan to live well beyond that! My relatives tend to get sick and live for at least another 20 years after! They have been passing in their 90's! I figure with exercise and a good diet...I can make it to 120 or so! My grandson will be in his 80's then! :rotfl:

Today, I am going to do an easy 2 miles and xt. See ya later!

Panda, it's a date! I promise to show up as a young, 60-something woman and assure you that you DO still look hot (of course, I married a man 6 years younger than I am with the theory that since men don't grow up, this one will look good a little longer...).

Steff, enjoy your walk and xt! I was going to walk outside but it's very windy, and I woke up too late to make it to mall walking. Guess it may have to be the TM if it doesn't get nicer this afternoon! See you at the World for many years to come, I suppose! :cool1:

Hello, my walking buddies!

My son and I made the trip to Myrtle Beach on Friday at breakneck pace to do our two races, but... we only got to do one. My full report is on the weekly race report thread here (http://www.disboards.com/showpost.php?p=23271367&postcount=15) but suffice it to say that the one hour we had from the start of the Family Fun Run to the start of the 5K didn't quite happen as advertised -- the FFR started late and was really more at parade pace because of the huge number of entrants, the congested course, and the obligatory lines for the post-race goodies. We both had a good time though -- and as far as I'm concerned, that's the real objective for us.

I gotta get more walking in -- Too much work and too little TM time for me lately, and I have several races scheduled over the next 4 weeks.

Good Morning! I didn't get a chance to go walking on Saturday, but yesterday DBF and I spend the day walking around the LA Zoo.

Wow, Wendy.....I don't know how you do it all! I definitely need to take some energizing lessons from you. Sorry that your 5K got all messed up but it sounds like you had a really wonderful time with your son, which is truly the main thing. Years from now he won't remember that you missed but race, but he WILL remember the great time he had with Mom. (He must do KK next year!) It is so nice when our kids actually CHOOSE to spend time with us. My 28-year old son is going to be my teammate for the Expedition Everest Adventure in September and he is excited already. Maybe you can sneek yours out of school for that one. BTW, we have the movie this week.... can we meet earlier for dinner?

Hi Jeanne, are you and Nancy doing the ToT with us again this year? I think Vic is setting up the LT tavern dinner for us again. Of course since we are staying at the Boardwalk we will have after race drinks at the pool again, we are going to make sure everyone knows this time.

Wendy is one of those Cyborgs, that runs on nucular energy, she just looks like a pretty WISH princess.

We will be having our Mini Golf and Dinner FE on race day. Way too much fun. Don't miss out!

The race director of the 10-mile race got back to me today. I had emailed him, "Do you welcome walkers? What is the closing time for finishing?"

and he replied, "Negative. We expect all participants to finish the 10 mile in 2.5 hours."

So, even though that seems like a 15-minute mile pace, same as the Minnie, I guess I'm not invited. :(

Dave and Robert: Yes, Nancy and I are both planning to do TofT this year. Please keep us posted as to what the dinner arrangements are. Last year we had already made plans to do MNSSHP and meet up with some of our cruise friends so we were not able to do the dinner at LTT, but would love to be there this year. We both want to stay at either BW or BC with our points but that is not our home resort so we have to wait for the 7-month window. John and I will probably come down on Thursday and leave Sunday, but Nancy usually takes a whole week around that time. We also plan on doing mini-golf again....that was so much fun last year!

Duckie: er, excuse me, did the race director really say "negative" to your question about walkers? Would you please inform that stupid ignoranus (spelled that way on purpose!) that many walkers can easily maintain a 15 minute pace and complete a 10-mile course within 2.5 hours. If you want to do it, just sign up anyway.....and be sure to flip him the bird as you cross the finish line. What a jerk!

Jeanne, that was his exact email. Just "Negative." Not, "Sure, but the course closes in 2.5 hours." Just "Negative." I hate to say it, but it hurt my feelings. I am working so hard at walking faster. Maybe I need to run the first 50 feet? Would that make me a runner? :confused3 Because I see people get tired and start to walk sometimes. I assume by his answer that I would BE DLF since he has probably convinced everyone else not to come, either.

I'm so sorry, Duckie. I have had mixed experiences with race directors, as we do with all folks I guess. Sometimes they are very apologetic that the race course must close before they anticipate I'll have time to finish. Some even explain it's because of the difficulty of finding volunteers to hang out on the course until all the walkers make it in, or because of difficulties with road closures and local police. More often now, though, they have some way of accommodating walkers -- with early starts or longer course closure times. I'm sorry this race didn't work out, but KEEP TRAINING and KEEP TRYING! You'll find the right race eventually and it will be so worth it!

Jeanne! Oh my stars! I didn't even realize that was this week till you pointed it out. Yes, yes, yes -- we'll do dinner. Pick a place and I'll mapquest directions there. I'll eat anything!

Duckie, there is your motivation to be faster walker. Two years ago I entered a small local run race and walked. I was last by about 30 seconds. Last year I walked it again, I beat several of the runners this time. It was over 90 degrees with high humidity and hills. I had right at an 11 min per mile pace.

Last year also at our biggest race the 10K classic, I won the walk class and beat about 500 of the runners out of a field of over 3000. I walked most of the race with the second place walker, at 5 miles he told me to go on since he was running out of steam, I did the last mile in 10:23.

As a walker you can hold your own in any of the races if you train properly. Like Jeanne said a lot of runners can't comprehend that a walker is not a cripple and that some people really do walk on purpose.

Thanks for the encouragement. But if he said "negative," does that mean even if i can make the time limit, I can't play with them? Believe me, it gives me plenty of motivation! What happened to "You can't say you can't play"? Wait, maybe that is only on school playgrounds. But still.

It's not like I asked if I could bring my dog or roller skate or skateboard or ride a bike or drive or anything....

Duckie: I don't know what your normal pace is, but if you can maintain a 15 minute mile or faster, I would go for it. I usually don't run a single step and I pass "runners" all the time. Besides, alot of runners really only run intervals, which means they run for several minutes and then walk for several. Some of them are fairly slow runners and ghastly slow walkers, which means that a solid brisk walker can pass them easily.

Wendy: let me check out what's at Briar creek and I'll get back to you.
