New toy coming!!!!!!!!!!

After several weeks of shopping and looking and talking and reading we decided to "stimulate the economy" by buying a Pentax K200 DSLR with a 50-200mm lens. We should have it Thursday and a month till the Disney trip to get used to it. This will our first DSLR so any of you veterans have any words of wisdom for the newbie.

Good thinking- Maybe they paid for before 10am delivery and we could get some pictures before lunch!

My best suggestion is to read the manual, learn as much as you can then go forth and take pictures. The great thing with digital is you can look at them and delete the ones you do not want. Pay attention to what the camera was doing when you took the picture.

You will probably set it originally on the auto settings but play with the other ones as well. Aperture is probably the most common one tried.

Welcome to the DSLR and Pentax family! Did you also get the kit 18-55mm lens?

I have the K100D and will be happy to help you with any of the Pentax brand specific questions. There are many of us that can help with the DSLR questions. Most questions for DSLRs luckily do not go specific to brands.

I plan on getting a Nikon in Early October time frame. I downloaded the manual two days ago and was starting to browse through it.

my suggestion is to get another lense, your goign to want something a lot wider than 50mm.....unless like UK said, you got the kit lense, then you're going to be okay.

Welcome to the Club! I too have a K200D. I have only had it about 3 months and haven't been able to shoot nearly as much as I would like due to work, but I would agree with the others....read the manual and practice!

I will be taking ours on its first Disney trip in December and looking forward to it! I have the kit lens and the 18-250 plus several old film Pentax lenses.

I have tried my old 50mm F2.0 on the camera and 50 is getting a little wide, especially for any indoor shooting. If it is in your budget and you didn't get the kit lens, you may want to look for something a little wider before you head to Disney!

Yes I got the kit lens with it that is why I bought the zoom. I figured I would have a 18-55 and then the 50 - 200 lens and should be covered for a while. Thanks for all the responses. And Gdad thanks for the link to the manual I appreciate it!

Your next lens should probably be the 50mm F1.4 lens. I did my first WDW w/DSLR trip with a handful of lenses but the vast majority of my shots were taken with the 18-55mm, 50-200mm, and the 50mm F1.4. In fact, out of ~2,500 shots, about half were taken with the 50mm. It's fantastically sharp and it excels in low light, which may be a struggle for the other lenses. (Don't worry, I'm sure that even without it, you'll still be way better in low light than whatever you were using before. )

Plus, that will lead you down the path of eventually carrying 6+ lenses around with you like some of us.

Well the UPS truck drove right down my street delivered something down there and flew right on by my house So I checked the tracking number on line and it said the following"THE PACKAGE WAS MISSED AT THE UPS FACILITY, UPS WILL DELIVER ON THE NEXT BUSINESS DAY " so I should be getting it today. Let me first just say as others have.... CONGRATS!!!! Welcome to the Pentax and DSLR family! We're a little dysfunctional, or as Stitch says "This is my family.... It's little, and broken, but still good." It sounds like you got the exact same setup as my DH did except he got his prior to the K200D, so it's the K100D. I just want to strongly recommend like Groucho did, look into the 50mm f/1.4. PRICELESS.... even though they put a price on it.

So, Pooh_Girl and Groucho (or anyone else who knows) let me ask you this. This 50mm f/1.4 lens is fixed 50mm and it is designed to work really well in low light?? Is there more to this or is this all. I googled it and it looks like from what I am reading this is the main purpose of the lens. Which interest me because this is one of the reason we bought a SLR for better low light pics. Thanks!

thats all the 50mm does. Works well in all situations, but its a really fast lense, so it excels in low light.
