Hello all.

My family and I are staying at the cabins for the first time ever next week for 8 days, 7 nights. I'm wondering if any of you fort veterans can help me out with a couple of things.

- How much bug spray do I need to bring? A regular can or the extra duty, it'll take another suitcase, can? :) I wasn't sure how buggy it is especially with all the rain that's been down there lately.

- Are sparklers allowed at the fort for night time entertainment for a 10 and 4 year old?

- Grandma and Grandpa are coming along for this trip. We'd like to be in a centralized area for easy access. We aren't planning on a cart this time, but that may change. Suggestions on which loop to try to request? I know its not guaranteed.

I'm lucky enough to have two girls who love to camp :cool1:. I'm hoping next year we can come back down and truly enjoy the camping experience. This group seems to have a good time on the boards. I bet the campgrounds are a good time when you are in residence.

Thanks for any pointers you can provide. I appreciate it.

The Cabins are in Lopps 2100 to 2800 with 2100 being probably the closest to all the Fort activities. I would look at a Fort map and decide if you think you may want a cart.

As to bugs. I suggest you go to Bass Pro Shops and purchase a Bug suit. They are in the hunting dept. They are kind of warm as they are designed to stop Mosquito's from biting through the mesh but they do work.

Just kidding about the bug suit but I am sure there will be Mosquito's, especially with all the rain lately so I would think spray or lotion is a must. We use the Skin so soft stuff and it works pretty good. It may not hurt to have a couple of Citronella Candles to put out for those times you wish to sit outside on the deck...drinking Beer!:thumbsup2

Everyone thinks the Mocking Bird is the State Bird of Florida but us Floridian's know that it is really the Mosquito.

I don't see a problem now with the sparklers since the rain has arrived but I am not sure as there was a fire ban for a while during the dry season and it may have not been lifted yet.

HI! and welcome to the Dis!:grouphug:

You will have a wonderful time at Fort Wilderness! We have a camper and just returned from a week long trip on 5/15.(before all the rain started,:rolleyes1)

We didn't notice the bugs being a problem at all, but as I said it hadn't started the downpours when we were there, it was just hot. You should notice the bugs even less in a cabin than a camper I would think. We mainly saw lovebugs at the campfire and pool and they were not a problem to us. I have a friend leaving today for a 4 day stay in the cabins and I will ask her when she returns if they had a problem with them and let you know.

I don't think sparklers or fireworks of any kind are allowed but someone else may know more about this.

I would request the 2100 loop since it is more centralized and close to a comfort station with showers(1100 loop) and a bus stop. I would also beg for one of the two cabins in 100 at check-in but you have to be God(or TCD:laughing:) to get them!

We got a cart from Kenny this trip and really loved having it!:cool1: It was worth the money because we eat at our camper most of the time and would have rather spent the money for the cart than on so-so food in the parks.

Hope you have at least one full day planned for the campground to enjoy the new pool slide and splash zone. We also really enjoyed the daily activities at the Fort. My kids had a ball playing bingo at the campfire and they wished they did that more than 3 days a week. My son won a water gun and my daughter won a i-pod lamp thing and we only played two days.

I hope you have a magical trip:wizard: and have beautiful weather with NO BUGS!:thumbsup2

Welcome to the boards!

The bugs actually weren't that bad over the weekend- I dont think I got even one bite! I usually keep the Family Off wipes around for the kids, just in case and have citronella if needed...

The Fort is a great place to be, but its definitly better when you are with Fiends :cool1:

We're thinking of trying the cabins in 2010 - hopefully! Looks like a lot to do at FW and lots of fun. The new water play area looks fun and the slide looks nice as well. Have a great trip and let us know how you liked it.

:welcome:

Take a peek HERE if you're looking for golf cart info - including 2 cheaper off-site companies that have been used/recommended by others here. :thumbsup2

Have a wonderful trip!

Thank you all for the kind welcome. I really appreciate the suggestions and tips. I'll definitely look at the GC options. I didn't even think about checking into outside rentals there.

Have a wonderful night. I can't wait until next week.
