So I was hoping to book a studio at the Poly. I now know that with less than 7 months out that is not easily done. I saw something about waitlists. How do I get on one or should I chalk this up to experience and try for the Poly studio on the next trip?

Wait lists are what owners can use to get priority on rooms that are booked and dropped. Owners are only allowed 2 outstanding waitlist at a time.

No owner will tie up both a waitlist and points for a potential not actual renter and most wouldn't take money for rooms they couldn't book.

That's the long answer. The short answer: you can't waitlist a rental.

That said it's not a given rooms are booked. Try the rent trade board. Doesn't hurt to check.

As to Poly and less than 7 months out, be aware that during DVC's long off-season, which runs from mid-Jan to late Sep, Poly has thus far been fairly easy to get even at 6 months out in 2016 for most dates.

The term 'renting points' is a bit misleading; what actually happens is that you pay a member to make a reservation for you with their points. As a non-member, you can't make a reservation with DVC points; only the person who owns the DVC contract that the points belong to can do that. So, whether or not to try a waitlist is the member's call.

And as others have said, I don't think there's much chance you'll get a member to a waitlist, but hopefully you wouldn't need one. It's worth a try! :)
