New Reservation System?

I just made 4 reservations for four different room types and only got one reservation number. Three of the reservations started and ended on different dates although all were for the same month and same resort and many of the same days. I have done this in the past but have always had separate reservation numbers. I was wondering what is the benefit of this and how do the different parties make separate dining reservations for the same day when they ask for your room reservation number with each dining request? In the past I have made my reservations in blocks of seven days each for one for two or three weeks in a row. I thought this gave me more flexibility ie. Dining reservations, a changing resort or room location depending on situations that may come up after the reservation was made and/or we arrived. Any ideas what is the “good” reason for the change?

Each reservation is still actually listed separately in the system, but the new reservation system files them under a new single master itinerary/travel portfolio number.

For purposes of cancelling/DDP, etc., they are all still separate individual reservations.
