New range help

We recently had to get a new range and now have a small issue. The old range had a flat top and meet the wall, so small things like a light tray, the rolling pin, and salt and pepper sat on it.

The new one is all black with an included top to the wall and due to the anti tip feature a gap to the wall.

So, no more flat safe shelf and a fear that whatever we put on the metal backsplash could fall behind.

So, my questions are...
Can anybody recommend a shelf to cover the gap and make it flat?
Any ideas on what materials could be used to fill the gap between the wall and stove that are safe? We would want something like a pool noodle, but know that foam jammed behind a range is not a good idea.

Any help or possible google terms would be very welcomed.
