Just ordered a remanufactured Epson R1800 yesterday and I should have it next week. I am very excited to get this printer. Does anyone have one that can give me any tips on printing out of CS3? I know about spot proofing, and profiles, but anything else you can think of would be great.

We've had an R1800 for some time now. It is a great printer. Here's some things we've learned:
+Epson ink works best. We've used refilled inks, house brand inks and specialty inks. The specialty inks worked OK for specific cases (B&W, for example) but not so well for normal photo printing. Yes, Epson inks are expensive, but after working through the hassles of finding ICCs, determining which to use with each pair of paper and ink comibinations the effort was too much.
+Epson paper also works best, although others, if they have an ICC profile, work well too (we use Epson, Adorama, Moab and Red River). We've had a lot of trouble with HP papers such as tri-fold brochure; they take a lot of tweaking to the output settings to get a good print.
+Run the printer at least once per day. Although the clogging is much less than our old Epson 3000, it still needs cleaning if not used for a couple of days. Lately, this hasn't been a problem as we've been busy.
+Have plenty of space. The printer with its trays out needs a square that is two feet on a side. And it is pretty heavey as well.
+Roll paper is great, but I wish the printer had a cutter.
+Disc printing works really well; we've used our own templates in Illustrator and Photoshop to make some good-looking discs. Not really speedy; if we have a run of more than fifty we send them out.

All in all, a really great printer. Ours has been going string for four years now.
Good luck!

Thanks Ritch. I primarily use Ilford Paper on my R340, so I hope they work as well on the 1800 as that printer. (they have good ICC profiles online)
Have you ever printed B&W and Fine Art?
I really love doing B&W but I could not afford the 2400, but I have heard the 1800 does a pretty good job.

Thanks for the tips!

Yes, we've done B+W; it comes out pretty good. Comparing it to a full-up B+W printer (I think it was a Roland), there weren't as many shades of dark gray-black in the Epson output. Looks good framed on the wall, though.

The only "Fine Art" we've done was to print out some heavily modified portraits for placing into frames for using in an on-stage set and in the theatre entry (to set "the mood"). SO they didn't have to be really nice, just look good to convey an impression. We printed on canvas and it came out OK, but we went through several sheets to fine tune how much we should manipulate the images in PS versus how much just printing on canvas would add; and the colors all needed to be spread out, as I recall (darks needed to be darker and highlights brighter). Part of that may have the environment they were displayed in, of course.
HTH.
