Hello All--New to DIS today and am interested in learning about pin collecting!
I have two young daughters (4 and 2months), and I would love to start collections
for them, so that when they get older, they can have a love for Disney and all the "magic"
that WDW has-I would love any suggestions on good beginning pins as my Family and I are
heading to Disney this year Dec7-16. Thanks ALL!!!!!

You've come to the right place!!! And are starting at a great time...
I would look for pins you like I think we have all decided that is A#1!

When you go in Dec. You buy some pins and can trade with Cast Members or hang on
to the ones you purchase.
If you really want to get into it...just read some posts here, or on DIZPINS. COM they tell all the new pins coming out.

Anyway, have fun, and again, WELCOME!!!

Thanks for the advice! I do have one question though, are cast members usually
willing to part with their pins or is it something where you really have to have
something they want in order for them to give you something?

A cast member who is on duty and is wearing a lanyard as part of their uniform MUST trade any pin they have on their lanyard for any pin you have, as long as your pin is a Disney pin that they don't have already.

While there are some more arcane rules about what constitutes a Disney pin, and the rules are different at WDW and DL, if you bought the pin from Disney - it's tradeable at WDW. As you get more sophisticated about the rules, there are sources for cheap pins which are discussed on these boards frequently, and you can increase your lanyard trading stock that way, rather than waiting to buy pins at WDW.

When you do start looking at CM lanyards you will find that many of them have the same pins, but every once in a while you find a treasure and then all the hunting was worth while. Plus you'll find that your children find talking and trading with CMs is fun. I've seen extremely shy children gaining confidence over a vacation period and trading like a pro by the end of the week.

So welcome to our crazy world. You will have a LOT of fun and meet some great people.

Hiya Sy!!!

Glad you found your way over here! Told you all you had to do was ask and you'd get plenty of information!

I'll be up at Disney the 1st - 8th. Maybe we can meet up, or I'll set up a pin meet so you and your kids can meet some of us and do some trading with non-cast members that won't have their's or your heads spinning!

Again Welcome to the DIS, You're gonna love it here!!!:D :D :D

Hello. Since you have two daughters, one strategy for them might be to pick a princess (i.e. Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella, Ariel, etc.) and a character (Mickey, Minnie, Pooh, etc.) for each girl so they aren't collecting the same ones. There are some lovely character rack pins out there that you can pick up at the parks. The other advantage is that you can buy them over the phone from Walt Disney World and Disneyland marketing as well as from the online auctions for not much more than retail. Keep an eye on this board's pin trading forum as well as DizPins since members quite often sell single and groups of pins. The main thing is to have fun and try not to get caught up in the "it's a limited edition, I have to have it" frenzy.

Welcome to the DIS!

You will find a wealth of information on these boards. Pin collecting can be a lot of fun, and can lead to some wonderful friendships. (be warned that it can also be addictive and expensive!)

Hope to see you post often.

:pinkbounc Hello fellow pin collectors!!! I can't thank you all enough for the warm welcomes and the great advice!!! I cannot wait to get going on my pin collecting adventures...I'm afraid now that I won't want to do anything else while I am at WDW besides collect pins for the kids and myself! Does anyone know if there is a place in WDW (or elsewhere) where they have discounted pins or pins that no-one has wanted in awhile so they offer them for a cheaper price. Don't get me wrong, I am not looking to get a bunch of cheapo pins-but I thought that it might be a good way to get started(ie buying a bunch of pins and trading alot when we actually go to WDW)---does anyplace like this exist? Also, how many varieties of pins are there? I am looking at starting my oldest daughters (4) collection with alot of the princess pins, she already has Snow White and Ariel-I wanted to know how many different ones there are out in the world so that I know when I have got something good going. Again, thanks for all the help---I know I am going to love it here and that I am going to be a crazy pin addict!!!!!

Hi and welcome... you'll love pin trading really I do, and after a while you will learn to live without food so you can buy pins but its worth it really.

Actually its a hoot, while your at WDW visit us at the Contemporary Resort every Friday night lots of pin trading.

No, Disney doesn't discount pins. If anything, the price goes up. Another suggestion is that Disney sells LE(Limited Edition) pins at their Gallery Stores (there are 12 scattered across the nation) and starting sometime next month every Saturday they will release 7 new pins at the Disney Store in the local mall. This would be a great way to start stocking up on pins.

Lastly, if you want to look at pins that have been sold in the past/present, go to pinpics.com. It is a database that the community of pin collectors has been working on for about 2 years. It also has a feature where you can list what pins you have to trade and what pins you want and it will e-mail the other person asking if they want to trade with you. The "trade assistant" is still not without some minor flaws, but it helps when you are geographically challanged (i.e. not close to WDW or DL). Again, welcome to our group and have FUN.

Another new pin trader here. I have (drum roll) 30 pins, which I actually thought was a pretty good number until I found out that alot of pin traders have hundreds. But I wanted to tell you that the CMs at WDW not only have to trade with you, but that they're so nice about it. If you're at a cash register and the CM sees you looking at their lanyard, they'll hold it out for you to see. One time I told a cast member what pin I was looking for, and she radioed throughout the whole store (World of Disney!) to see if anyone had that pin (no one did, but it was really nice of her). And once I got a HM pin from a CM and when she found out how much I liked the attraction, she told me all kinds of little trivia about it. Your litttle ones, at least your 4 year old, will love trading with the CMs.

HA--if you thought 30 was a small amount--you should come and check out my whopping collection of (hold back) 3!! That's right---3....I don't know why in the past years I haven't gotten more into it, but at least I am now right!!!!! (Even got Figmentvi in on the madness) I am so excited to have my 4 yo trade with the CM's. I am hoping that I can keep working on her collection for the next 120 days (:D ) and by the time we go to WDW, she will be able to really get into it. She loves to talk (way to much) and I think it would be a great way for her to do something that no-one else in our group may be doing!!!! SHOW ME THE PINS!!!!!!!:jester:

Hi sydally:

Don't tell little miss thing.....but she has another 7 pins on the way for her birthday present.

So your total is now up to 10 !!!!!
